As you can read about now in The Spinoff's oral history of the song, this was a time when hip hop in Aotearoa was at its peak, music video directors were hot property, and kids were still buying CD singles. So how did Sani Sagala, a former musician working in a South Auckland bakery, find himself in the centre of the hip hop storm with the highest selling single of the year?
