香港推理小說合集《偵探冰室》，結集不同的本地偵探小說作家，每年圍繞不同的主題，創作充滿香港元素的短篇推理小說。在一眾作者眼中，《偵探冰室》既是實驗場地，亦是培育新作家的平台。數數手指，《偵探冰室》已出版了七集，有新晉作者加入，亦有「老鬼」持續參與，舊人帶新人，亦成功協助部分作者轉型。

In this episode of Bookcast HK, we speak with Professor Alvin K. Wong on his new book, Unruly Comparison: Queerness, Hong Kong, and the Sinophone (2025). Building on women of colour feminism and queer of colour critique, Professor Wong’s “unruly comparison” troubles the Eurocentric tendency of queer studies and the China-centrism of area studies.

This innovative approach of comparison does not look for direct equivalents; rather, it focuses on points of friction, asymmetry, and incongruity, where things do not translate neatly into another. It opens up alternative methods to investigate queer cultures and “perverse modernities” in “small places” like Hong Kong, thereby allowing us to “unknow” the dominant narrative of the city as being merely caught between British colonialism, China-centrism, and global capitalism.

By performing unruly comparison of incommensurate texts and genres, Professor Wong generates productive conversations on disparate topics: the undoing of archives (Chapter 1), queer minor transnationalism (Chapter 2), trans cinema and queer globalities (Chapter 3), intimacies among queer migrant workers beyond capitalist logic (Chapter 4), and the representation of sex workers and queering of geopolitical borders (Chapter 5). These original readings reveal the racial, gender, and sexual incommensurability within Hong Kong and across the transpacific Sinophone.

Towards the end of the episode, Professor Wong shares his new book project on queer Sinophone visuality, featuring experimental films by queer artists like Ellen Pau and Yonfan, and treats us to a reading from his book on the politics of unknowing Hong Kong.

七月的Bookcast，我們邀請了饒啟璋（Keith）和饒啟芬（Fanny）兩姊弟，由參與出版《蔬果花木拾趣》出發，分享他們眼中作為作者、研究者、博物學家的父親，饒玖才的面貌。

饒玖才先生早年在中國、新西蘭和美國接受農業、林業及自然護理的教育。1955至1990年在香港政府漁農處工作，退休前擔任助理處長。退休後，他專注於香港及鄰近地區的歷史風物研究，著作甚豐。

2019年，他著手編撰《蔬果花木拾趣》，期間身體抱恙，一度考慮放棄。幸得家人、朋友鼎力協助，最終順利出版。

Keith憶述，兒時闖進爸爸的工作室「歎冷氣」，還能勾勒當時酸枝圓檯、收音機、書櫃的佈置。長大後，他跟爸爸出門搜集資料，一起拍攝香港各地的芒果樹和大樹菠蘿。Fanny就形容，爸爸是個安靜的人，生活井然有序，熱愛觀察和閱讀，並透過寫作分享知識，希望人們「知其然，亦知其所以然」。

被香港推理小說作家陳浩基形容：「就算不談推理，也是驚人的歷史小說」。耗時超過一年作前期資料搜集，推理小說作家莫理斯在2017年起陸續推出 《香江神探福邇，字摩斯》系列，至今已推出三集，第四集亦可望今年年底面世。

莫理斯模仿 #福爾摩斯 探案的風格，不過其筆下的福爾摩斯和華生，則由英國人換成光緒年間的中國人福邇和華笙，既推理亦述說香港在晚清時期的歷史。

In this episode of BookcastHK, we spoke to maritime historian Dr Stephen Davies. He talked about the books he had wrote and a podcast about Hong Kong histories.

For the older generations, Stephen is not an unfamiliar name. He used to be a host of RTHK programmes. He was appointed a Chevalier de l’Ordre du Mérite Maritime by the Government of France in 2009 for his contributions to cross-cultural maritime scholarship and education. In 2020, he was made a Fellow of the Royal Asiatic Society Hong Kong. Between 1990 and 2004 he and his partner Elaine Morgan sailed 50,000 miles, visiting 32 countries in their 11.8m sailing boat.

After living in HK for half a century, in 2022, Stephen relocated to Europe, half a year in England and half a year in France. He was in town for holidays in February, we had the pleasure to speak to him during his brief visit in Hong Kong.

《Islanders島民》是一份中英雙語地圖雜誌（map-zine），由組織「島民」出版，從坪洲居民的角度出發，以地圖展示島嶼生活的獨有節奏，輔以文字和數據，帶領讀者放慢步伐，按圖索驥，探索永續生活的可能性。雜誌自2020年至今共出版了四期，分別以《有機空間》、《豐饒之地》、《在地生活》和《浮城自足》為主題。
