  • Thrity Umrigar: Honor

Thrity Umrigar joins Carol Fitzgerald to talk about her latest book (her 10th), HONOR, which has just been published in paperback. Carol first read Thrity’s novel, THE SPACE BETWEEN US, back in 2006, which made a big impression on her. The same can be said of HONOR.

Thrity talks about the reporting that Ellen Berry did for the New York Times that drew her to want to tell the story of Smita, an Indian-born reporter who has been asked to cover a story for a colleague. Smita left India as a child, and she has been reluctant to return. She will be covering the trial of two brothers. They have been charged with killing the husband of their sister, Meena, who in the wake of this tragedy has been horrifically burned. The reason for the crime? Meena’s family is Hindu, and her husband was Muslim. In this village, such merging of cultures is unacceptable. Thrity talks about the difference between life in the city and the smaller villages. She also shares that she always sees a story right from the start and parses it out as she writes.

And before you feel that this interview was all intellectual, do note that Carol confesses to watching both “Fabulous Lives of Bollywood Wives” and “Indian Matchmaking” on Netflix. Thrity chides her about it.

  • Alli Frank and Asha Youmans: Tiny Imperfections and Never Meant To Meet You

Alli Frank and Asha Youmans talk to Carol Fitzgerald about their first two novels, TINY IMPERFECTIONS and NEVER MEANT TO MEET YOU, both of which are Bookreporter Bets On selections. Both books are sharply smart and full of comedic timing (Carol laughed out loud reading both) as readers see both dialogue and inner monologue from characters. Alli and Asha once worked together in a tony private school; Alli was a kindergarten teacher, and Asha was an administrator. Each often said, “If I ever write a book.” And then one day they joined to do just that. They talk about their co-writing process. And they share how their different backgrounds - Alli is white and Jewish, Asha is Black and Baptist - inform their writing realistic characters. At a time when diversity is being touted in publishing, Alli and Asha are creating characters that talk the talk - and make you laugh.

  • Lynda Cohen Loigman: The Matchmaker's Gift

Lynda Cohen Loigman joins Carol Fitzgerald to talk about her new historical novel, THE MATCHMAKER’S GIFT. Lynda was writing something else when Lynda’s daughter brought her roommate home when their college classes shut down during the pandemic. The three of them ended up watching “Indian Matchmaking” on Netflix, and the roommate piped up and said that her grandmother had been a matchmaker. This sparked an idea for Lynda. Suddenly she found herself casting the book that she was writing aside to tell the story of a Jewish matchmaker who had been born in 1910, along with that of the matchmaker’s granddaughter, a divorce lawyer in 1994.

THE MATCHMAKER’S GIFT is laced with lots of historical details about matchmaking and Rabbinical courts, and is peppered with Yiddish expressions. Lynda talks about how she nails her storytelling --- and shares wonderful details about how she approached her research.

  • Sally Koslow: The Real Mr. Tobias

Sally Koslow joins Carol Fitzgerald to talk about her latest novel, THE REAL MRS. TOBIAS, which explores three generations of a family living in New York City. They are three very different women, and their interactions with each other make for strong storytelling. Aside from their own stories, they are contending with the possible backlash of a traffic incident that the grandson, son and husband drove away from without exploring its consequences.

Sally and Carol met decades ago when they both worked at Mademoiselle magazine. They talk about Sally's career as a novelist and nonfiction writer since then, as well as reminisce about what magazines used to be.

  • Casey Sherman: Helltown

Casey Sherman talks to Carol Fitzgerald about HELLTOWN: The Untold Story of a Serial Killer on Cape Cod. Casey gives readers a real 360-view of the heinous crimes committed by Tony Costa in the summer of 1969 when young women were not just murdered, they also were dismembered and violated after their deaths. With the national story of the Manson murders, and the local story of Ted Kennedy and Chappaquiddick, Costa’s rampage never made widespread news, but it has a long and storied history on the Cape.

Casey shares how he came upon the idea of writing this book and his extensive research project, which included seeing some photos with images that are hard to get out of his mind. Also layered into the story are two literary legends --- Kurt Vonnegut and Norman Mailer --- each of whom competed to write about these murders, and the rivalry between them. He also talks about the film adaptation of HELLTOWN, which was signed even before the book was done.

  • Bonnie Garmus: Lessons in Chemistry

Bonnie Garmus talks to Carol Fitzgerald about her debut novel, LESSONS IN CHEMISTRY, which has been getting a ton of buzz since it came out in April. It was a “Good Morning America” Book Club selection for April and an instant New York Times bestseller. Bonnie shares that one day she walked away from a meeting, headed to her desk, and banged out the first chapter of the book --- and explains what inspired that. She also talks about Elizabeth Zott being a character in an earlier book draft, where her role was not part of the main storyline, and why she loves writing her. She studied chemistry to write this book and brought on chemist friends to check her work lest the publisher’s copywriters needed to brush up on their science skills. She discusses why she wanted to set the book against the timing of the late ’50s and ’60s. Carol guesses why Bonnie’s dog is named 99; Bonnie likes her idea, but that is not the reason. They also explore the rest of the characters, including the amazing dog Six-Thirty.
