Sort of a follow up to the "if you want better pay, get a better job" video. Over the course of the pandemic, I've seen my fair share of people saying "you should've invested the stimulus money!" These people are clearly unaware of how many people continue to struggle to pay the bills and keep themselves and their families fed. Such a notion also ignores that financial literacy is a thing, and such services aren't always available in all communities among other problems which I address.
*headdesk* This is why we can't have nice things. -_-
The recent resignation of Governor-General Julie Payette and ensuing scandal has brought up questions of accountability for the role. If only we took that one step further and brought that question up about the monarchy in general...
We've all seen those comments against raising the minimum wage that say "if you want better pay, get a better job." As if it were super simple. A myriad of obstacles stand in the way of such a notion being anywhere close to true, and it's time to expose it as the hack argument it is. One argument I forgot to include was the following: if you live in a poor and/or rural community, how are you supposed to get a better job if there are none around and you can't afford to move?
Claudia Conway, the daughter of Kellyanne Conway, recently shared videos showing what appears to be physical and verbal abuse at the hands of her mother. What's worse, when Claudia asked about Emancipation (of minors from abusive environments) she was told that her family was too powerful. That's messed up, and shows how the justice system is broken and the rich and powerful will never face due consequences.
Yesterday was MLK Day, and lots of people shared the usual quotes. My personal favourite of his is his "three evils" speech. He said that there are three evils that plague us; the evil of racism, the evil of militarism, and the evil of capitalism. It's a side of MLK that's rarely seen. Black liberation and equality would promote liberty and equality for ALL people, whether they are poor, middle class, or have various shades of skin colour.
Too many bothersome things, too little time. While the cancellation of the Keystone XL pipeline is an objectively good thing, the consequences are already rippling through Canada, and it's going to result in numerous headaches and facepalms over the next few months and years thanks to federal coddling by Trudeau, and ignorance and bullheadedness from Kenney in Alberta.
As promised, this is my favourite MLK speech: https://www.theatlantic.com/magazine/archive/2018/02/martin-luther-king-hungry-club-forum/552533/
The bungling on the vaccine rollout should dispel the myth of capitalist efficiency for people. The only "efficiency" capitalism is great at finding is how to maximize profits, because that is what capitalism is supposed to do at all costs. They are not beholden to society, or the people, or the government; they are beholden to their shareholders who make up a fraction of the population. It is a recipe for disaster and more people should recognize it as such.
Conservative Leader Erin O'Toole says his party is 'totally different than the Republican Party in the US' and I'm here to expose that as the fake new it is.
Why are people shocked that Biden broke his promises? We knew this would happen.
