Buddy chose this pairing to honor Pride Month 2026, and we're starting with a movie that packs a gut-punch! Directed and co-written by Kimberly Peirce, 1999's "Boys Don't Cry" is based on a true story. In 1993, a trans man named Brandon Teena (Hillary Swank) moved from Lincoln, Nebraska to the Falls City region of Richardson County, Nebraska. He was befriended by local bad-boys John Lotter (Peter Sarsgaard) and Marvin Thomas "Thom" Nissen (Brendan Sexton III). After moving in with her new friend Candace (Alicia Goranson), Brandon began dating Candace's friend Lana Tisdel (Chloë Sevigny). The film is very frank about how Brandon lives his life as a man and the lengths he will go to in order to convince everyone around him that he is a man, even though he is biologically still female. Unfortunately, some secrets just cannot be kept, and when Brandon is arrested for forging checks, Lana comes to bail him out and questions why he is in the women's section of the jail. Several lies by Brandon some time, but in the end the truth comes out, as it always does, and the results are catastrophic! Also starring Alison Folland, Rob Campbell, Matt McGrath, and Jeannetta Arnette.
