In today's episode, we are honored to have Senator Francis “Kiko” Pangilinan. After winning in the 2016 senatorial elections, Pangilinan continued his advocacy in agriculture. His most recent law was RA 11321 or the Sagip Saka Act, which he principally authored and principally sponsored in the Senate. Sagip Saka aims increase farmers' income by empowering them and connecting them to the market.
The Philippines being an agricultural country possess a vast array of natural resources. However, the country’s agriculture sector is beset with perennial challenges resulting to low incomes in farming, low rural employment, lack of food security, and weak agricultural competitiveness. In particular, some, if not most of the next generation of farmers, have abandoned or made a decline in their interest to invest in agriculture. Because of this, we would like to delve the issue further and bring insights, solutions and recommendations on the issues and challenges faced by the fisheries and agriculture sector.
