About 128 million years ago, snakes experienced a significant adaptation boom, leading them to evolve up to three times faster than lizards. Initially, when snakes first evolved from lizards over 100 million years ago, they were minor players in ecosystems dominated by dinosaurs. Fast forward to today, and there are around 4,000 snake species, ranging from massive green anacondas to tiny thread snakes. For a long time, people thought dinosaurs looked like giant, scaly lizards, but new discoveries show that’s not entirely true! Scientists have found evidence that many dinosaurs actually had feathers, even some of the big ones. Instead of the dull, greenish colors we imagined, they probably came in all sorts of bright colors and patterns. Their skin textures were more varied too, with some being scaly, but others having smooth or even fluffy skin. Fossils have also revealed that dinosaurs may have looked less bulky and more bird-like than we used to think. Basically, the picture we had of dinosaurs has changed a lot!

After the dinosaurs went extinct, mammals got 1,000 times bigger, and here’s why. With the dinosaurs out of the picture, there was a lot more space and food available for the surviving mammals. This allowed them to grow larger and take over the ecological roles that the massive dinos had filled. Bigger mammals could better defend themselves, explore new environments, and find diverse food sources. Plus, the climate and habitats favored these larger mammals, leading to the giants we see in the fossil record.
