Earth's history has seen some truly bizarre natural disasters. Take the Tunguska event in 1908, for example, where a massive explosion flattened 800 square miles of Siberian forest, likely caused by a meteor airburst. Then, there was a "Year Without a Summer" in 1816, caused by the eruption of Mount Tambora, which led to global cooling, crop failures, and food shortages. The tallest building in the world is Burj Khalifa - a skyscraper situated in Dubai. It was build right on sand! Why doesn't it sink into it? Billions, maybe even a trillion, cicadas are set to emerge in a super rare double-brood event. This means two broods, Brood XIII (which shows up every 17 years) and Brood XIX (every 13 years), will pop out at the same time. Entomologists, who study bugs, divide cicadas into these "broods" to track when they emerge. Usually, different broods come out at different times, but this year, both will appear together, something that last happened 221 years ago in 1803. This amazing synchronicity won’t happen again until 2245, and these broods are conveniently located right next to each other.

It seems that modern science has an explanation for everything that happens around us. But as it turns out, nature has a lot of other tricks up its sleeve like dancing forest on the shores of the Baltic Sea, walking rocks, raining jellyfish, and other amazing things that are so impressive, people often try to provide explanations for them that are far from correct. By the way, some of these strange natural phenomena are really scary.

Take, for example, the throbbing hum in Taos, New Mexico that has driven locals wild since the 1990s. The low-frequency hum deprives people of sleep and depletes their energy. Even though scientists have tried to find the source of the hum, they still haven’t pinpointed its origin. Different variations of the hum have also been heard in the UK, Australia, Canada, and other areas of the United States. Luckily, only about 2% of the world's population can hear it.
