Today’s show is a discussion and review of the 2021 Netflix original film The Guilty.

The Guilty is a remake of a Danish film by the same name.  The award winning Danish film co-written and directed by Gustav Moller in 2018 is virtually the same film aside from a few aesthetic liberties.  Moller got the story premise from a YouTube clip featuring a 911 audio call from a woman claiming to be kidnapped while her kidnapper sat nearby.  Another source of his inspiration was the Podcast “Serial” about a 1999 murder of a Maryland student.  Moller admitted his imagination went wild listening to these sources and felt a feature film could capture the same power of suggestion.  Along with co-writer Emil Nygaard Alberston, the two set out to do their research, which included observation in an actual 911 dispatch center.
 
The film was an instant success and Moller received multiple requests for remake rights.  In late 2018, Jake Gyllenhaal acquired the rights under his Nine Stories Productions studio.  Working alongside Bold Films, they began principal photography in Los Angeles in late 2020 and wrapped 11 days later.  The film was finally ready for release on June 23rd, 2021, but delayed due to the COVID pandemic.

Today’s show is a discussion and review of the long awaited last ride of Daniel Craig’s James Bond in No Time To Die.

From 1953 to 1966, Ian Fleming wrote and published 12 James Bond novels and two short story collections.  Following Fleming’s death in 1964, an additional 42 Bond novels were written by several authors commissioned by Ian Fleming Publications up to as recently as 2018.  Proven popular stories for TV, radio, and comics, the first of Fleming’s novels to be adapted for film was Dr No in 1962 starring Sean Connery.  The remainder of Fleming’s Bond novels were made into films from 1962 to 1987, before the first post-Fleming novel was used to make License to Kill in 1987 starring Timothy Dalton as Bond.

At the time, the only Fleming novel that had not been adapted to film by EON films, remained unused until 2006, discounting a loosely based 1967 spoof of the same name.  Daniel Craig has been surprisingly cast to take the reins of Britain’s super spy, as the new James Bond.  And for Craig's debut, Fleming's first novel was used for the new Bond era's first film Casino Royale.

The era of a new James Bond had begun and critics and audience fell in love with Craig’s rough raw take on the former suave debonair persona that we had grown used to for the past 5 decades. Since its debut Casino Royale has grossed $594 million dollars worldwide and was in the top 10 grossing films of 2006.  Craig went on to star in 3 more Bond films; Quantum of Solace, Skyfall, and Spectre.  In total, these 4 Daniel Craig Bond films had a worldwide gross of nearly $3.2 billion dollars and an average Rotten Tomatoes score of 78% by critics and 74% by audiences.  Needless to say, we thought the studio wouldn’t  stop making Bond films anytime soon.

A few years after Spectre, it was announced that the next Bond movie would be Daniel Craig’s last.  Although the news was disappointing, it didn’t seem like a big deal at the time, but now that No Time To Die is finally here, looking forward to watching it was bitter sweet.

Today’s show is a discussion and review of the 2021 film, Free Guy.

Free Guy is another screenplay plucked from the 2016 Black List.  A few Black List focused news articles had touted Free Guy as one of the best screenplays to make that particular Black List, but yet it sat untouched.  Just as 20th Century Fox began pre-production, they were acquired by Disney and rebranded as 20th Century Studios.  Thankfully Disney didn't put the breaks on production and instead offered their infinite Intellectual Property to director Shawn Levy and actor/star Ryan Reynolds.  When Free Guy was finally ready for release we waited in anticipation for what sort of fantastic film the Levy/Reynolds duo brought us.

Today’s show is a discussion and review of Paul Schrader’s 2021 American noir, THE CARD COUNTER.

It’s been 4 years since writer/director Paul Schrader made a film.  His last film, First Reformed (2017) brought the house down with Ethan Hawke in his best role to date.  Schrader is a methodical writer and refuses to commit to a project until he feels everything is just right.  And by “just right” I mean that Schrader has a detailed uncompromising process that he goes through each and every time, which is the reason why his films are very tidy. 

It’s been a long time since Martin Scorsese and Paul Schrader have worked together, 22 years to be exact.  Although the two have swapped roles in their partnership, they have always hit home runs with the likes of the Taxi Driver (1976); Raging Bull (1980), The Last Temptation of Christ (1988), and Bringing out the Dead (1999).  And if you’ve seen these four films, you know the type of film that these two film legends create.  Needless to say our expectations were high.

Today’s show is a discussion and review of the 2021 independent film Werewolves Within.

Based on the 2016 Ubisoft virtual reality game released on PS4 and Occulus, Werewolves Within was released to virtually no fanfare.  In fact, the film received only a limited film release and then was released globally on VOD.  To make matters worse, the film had the dubious honor of being released the same weekend as F9.  F9's opening weekend box office debut casted a shadow over every other film obscuring any attention Werewolves Within would have had. 

Kenny listed Werewolves Within on our June 25th Friday Picks article.  Kenny felt the quirky horror comedy whodunnit featuring a charming Sam Richardson would be a perfect distraction film for the weekend.  Once Kenny watched it, he was hooked and couldn't stop talking about it.  Of course, once Del watched it, they immediately worked on a script and the result is this podcast.

Writer/director Lisa Joy wrote the screenplay back in 2013 and it was subsequently voted into "The Black List".  For folks that don't know, The Black List is comprised of the best screenplays not produced as voted by film executives and producers.  Years later, Lisa's screenplay was purchased on she was hired as director to bring her vision to life.

In today's episode, Kenny and Del discuss and review Steve Martin's 25 year old comedy classic "Sgt Bilko."  

Serving in America’s armed forces is a job like many others, but like any other job, we have our fair share of hi-jinx.  To celebrate Labor Day, we decided to do a review and discussion of 1996’s Steve Martin comedy classic, “Sgt. Bilko,” to showcase the lighter side of the U.S. military.  After all, there are plenty of good times, fun stories, and laughter to be had among our soldiers and sailors during their daily routine.  

On today’s show, we will honor Labor Day with a review and discussion of a movie that  showcases the funnier side of the U.S. Military, specifically the U.S. Army.  Along the way, we will share some stories and some laughs about our time in the armed forces.

To help us with our discussion today, we invited a guest who has inside knowledge of life in the United States Army.  Christopher, retired from active duty and on occasion has been a guest on our show.  Today, we ask him to help us understand Sgt Bilko with the inside knowledge that only a person who has served in the U. S. Army would have.   

At the end of our review we are going to give it our style of rating with a Play, Pass, or Pause, to let you know whether or not you should watch it and why.  If you want to see our traditional star ratings, check out our Letterboxd account.
