This week's guest is Meredith Broussard. Data journalist Meredith Broussard is an associate professor at the Arthur L. Carter Journalism Institute of New York University, research director at the NYU Alliance for Public Interest Technology, and the author of “Artificial Unintelligence: How Computers Misunderstand the World.” Her academic research focuses on artificial intelligence in investigative reporting and ethical AI, with a particular interest in using data analysis for social good. She appeared in the 2020 documentary Coded Bias, all about the coded gaze in technology.
This is a podcast about parenting. It asks the question how do we raise our kids to be joyful in bleak times that make us so sad and angry. Each week, I invite a parent on to chat to me about their parenting journeys, how they’re navigating these tricky times with their kids, how to have big important conversations and how to still have fun and enjoy the world. This is a hopeful podcast about parenting. It’s inspired by my memoir, Brown Baby: A Memoir Of Race Family And Home, which has been out since February this year. I hope you have a copy.

This week I talk to the incredible author Tahmima Anam. Tahmima is the author of four novels. Her most recent one, The Startup Wife, is a hilarious skewering of the sexism of the tech industry. It follows Asha Ray, the inventor of a new utopian app, who soon finds herself sidelined in her own work, and starts to wonder why. Tahmima is such a lovely, funny, brilliant warm person to talk to. We talk about letting our kids use tablets, if they understand what we do for a living and the tech industry’s problem with women. It’s a great fun chat.

Welcome to season 2 episode 1 of Brown Baby podcast. This week's guest is actress and writer, Shobna Gulati. She is best known for dinnerladies, for Coronation Street, Loose Women, Celebrity Masterchef, and many more. She also wrote a memoir that came out this year called Remember Me?, which is a beautiful and sad book about losing a parent to dementia based on her experiences caring for her mother, who died in 2019.[9] During publicity interviews for the book, Gulati revealed that she had contracted Coronavirus earlier in 2020. We talk about her son finding his way in the world, the act of remembering for memoir, telling our children stories and what football team her son is allowed to support. It’s a soulful chat that we recorded over zoom early this year.

This week's guest is stand-up comedian, writer and actor, Josie Long. One of the funniest, more special people I know. Always there with positivity, soul, wisdom and jokes. Josie has been one of the most important people in my life and I get to chat to her in this SEASON FINALE of the Brown Baby podcast. We talk about climate change, the internet, why Christian Bale has never been in a romcom and the worst things we've done as parents.
THIS IS THE SEASON FINALE SO IT'S MY LAST CHANCE TO PLUG MY BOOK BUY MY BOOK PLEASE PLEASE BUY MY BOOK.
Welcome to Brown Baby, a podcast about parenting and kids and family that asks the question, how on earth do we raise our kids to be joyful and boundless in a bleak world we’re so sad and angry about.
Hosted by me, Nikesh Shukla, a writer, a dad of two and a forty year old man who recently returned to the basketball court because he watched The Last Dance in 2020 and thought, I used to be a super sharp shooter when I was younger.
Each week, I interview fellow parents of brown babies - writers, musicians, chefs, comedians, actors and more - to talk about their parenting journeys and the highs and lows they’ve experienced along the way.
This is a podcast Inspired by my memoir, Brown Baby: A Memoir of Race, Family and Home. A frank, funny and poignant look at parenting, Brown Baby will spark honest, self-effacing conversation about how we tell our kids about the world. Featuring parenting fails, plus the best (and worst) advice Nikesh and his guests have ever received, this is the comforting, uplifting podcast for anyone who’s ever found themselves searching for answers in a sleep-deprived Google hole.

This week's guest is acclaimed award-winning novelist, Hari Kunzru. One of my favourite writers, someone who asks big questions about the world. Who better to get on to the podcast than someone as smart as him. We discuss internet surveillance, kids arguing about god, gone-off melon and his new novel, Red Pill, which is a paranoid novel about art and why we tell stories, and far right radicalisation. It's an exceptional book.

This week's guest is: Mira Jacob. Mira is an author that I absolutely adore. Her writing is funny, tender, close to my experience. When I was writing Brown Baby, I came across her graphic memoir, Good Talk, which is a series of conversations between her and her mixed race child, about racism in Trump’s America. She talks about losing her father, trying to make her white in-laws understand what is happening in the country and her journey to self-acceptance. It’s brilliant.
(TW: grief, racism). We talk about difficult conversations with your kids and your parents about racism, a lot about losing a parent and grief, writing and reevaluating who you are the second you have a child.

This week's guest is the brilliant actor and writer Paterson Joseph! Johnson in Peep Show, Holy Wayne in The Leftovers. The star of so many television shows and plays, Paterson is an incredible presence onscreen and onstage, and a great thinker. This week, we talk about fatherhood, growing up, returning to the place you grew up in, raising mixed race kids in rural France and his obsession with Ignatius Sancho. Be warned, there is a lot of swearing at the start and end of this podcast, and the sound is a little off. I am learning and trying to get better.
