April is Child Abuse Awareness Month and The Brown Skin Mom Podcast is sitting down with author and speaker, Casandra Austin, on how to guard your little ones against abuse.
Casandra Austin is an old friend of mine. I invited her to the podcast to share her story of childhood abuse and give parents advice on how to keep our littles safe. From Springfield, IL, Casandra is the mother of a bright, young man named Amari, 14, and fiance to her love, Rohan. She is a speaker, mentor, and author of Unclothed Memoir of a Naked Soul. Casandra earned her Bachelor’s degree in Administration of Justice with a minor in Black American Studies from Southern Illinois University in 2005. She has spent the last decade working in the criminal justice system counseling and providing crisis intervention for juvenile and adult offenders. Casandra is allowing the flow of life to lead her on this journey called life.
As mothers, we sometimes worry about the dangers of the world when it comes to our children. In this podcast, we talk about signs to look for if you suspect your child is being abused. A few of those signs are:
* Sudden angry outburst
* Sexual promiscuity
* Isolation
Casandra shares the best way to guard against abuse is to keep the lines of communication open with your child. Keeping communication open with your children shows them that you’re human and that you’re there to listen to them. Respecting your child’s boundaries is another important step in protecting against abuse. This helps your child to respect their own boundaries and not second guess themselves as they grow older.
