Opiates are one of those double-edged swords.  There's nothing better for managing pain.  They're pretty much mandatory for people with severe pain.  They're also extremely addictive and deadly in the wrong hands.  There's plenty of blame to go around, too.  Are over-prescribing doctors to blame?  Overzealous pharmaceutical reps?  False marketing?  The jury is still out.
