The Christian life does involve activity, service, work, sacrifice, and care for others. But the question is whether our activity is flowing from relationship with God or slowly replacing it.

After a great spiritual victory, Elijah finds himself exhausted, afraid, discouraged, and alone. God leads him to Mount Horeb, the mountain of encounter. A great wind tears through the mountains, but the Lord is not in the wind. An earthquake shakes the ground, but the Lord is not in the earthquake. A fire blazes, but the Lord is not in the fire.

Then comes the silence.

Bruce reminds us that we often look for God in the dramatic, the spectacular, or the unmistakable. Yet the Holy Spirit often speaks in quieter ways, through a gentle conviction, a growing peace, a scripture that suddenly speaks into our life, or a prompting that returns again and again.

In a noisy world filled with constant information, screens, voices, and pressure, we can miss the quiet voice of God. The Holy Spirit does not usually compete with noise. He invites us into stillness, where we can become more attentive and receptive.

Many Christians believe God speaks, but fewer feel confident that they would recognise His voice. Our lives are full of noise, work, responsibility, social media, distractions, fears, opinions, desires, and disappointments. Yet beneath all of that, the Holy Spirit continues to speak.

Bruce reminds us that God often speaks through gentle promptings, not dramatic announcements. He may speak through a conviction in prayer, an invitation to trust, a challenge to forgive, or a quiet sense that a particular decision is right or wrong.

The vision of Ezekiel is deliberately confronting. The valley is full of bones, and they are very dry. Humanly speaking, there is no future there. But God asks Ezekiel, “Can these bones live?”

That question is not only about bones. It is about hope. It is about whether the Holy Spirit can still bring life to the places we have quietly given up on.

Bruce reminds us that the bones did not restore themselves and the valley did not fix itself. Life came when the breath of God entered what was dead.

Today marks the beginning of Bruce Downes’ new devotional series, Living in Step with the Holy Spirit.

In this episode, Bruce reflects on Acts 2:37–39, where Peter speaks to the crowd after Pentecost and declares that they will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit. He tells them:

“The promise is for you.”

This is where the journey begins.

Pentecost was not only a powerful moment in the life of the early Church. It was the beginning of a new way of living. Through the Holy Spirit, God draws His people into a relationship so intimate that His own life dwells within them.

Bruce reminds us that many Christians spend years trying to live the Christian life by their own strength. We believe in God, pray, serve, and try to grow closer to Him, but often we still carry the quiet assumption that everything depends on our own effort.

But the Christian life is not simply a life lived for God. It is a life lived with God.

The same Holy Spirit who came upon the apostles, sustained the martyrs, inspired the saints, and transformed ordinary men and women throughout history, is still at work today.

Before we learn to recognise His voice, discern His promptings, or follow His lead, we must first believe that this promise was never intended only for someone else.

The promise is for you.
