Buffy Boys

It's S02E13 "Surprise" and the Buffy Boys have reached the burning heart of the 'ship. Apocalypse is being Amazon Prime'd into town and Angel has one moment of pure happiness, but will it turn out okay in the end? We think: probably. Happy Birthday, Buffy.

Key Buffy Bits from this episode include:

• The iron 'id' in the velvet glove - Drusilla as a sexually enabled mirror for Buffy's desire

• Buffy's cursed birthday or "Nobody came to my party because they were dead"

• Delirium dreams and the wrought, collapsing metaphors of prophecy
• Sex as punishment, transition, and dissolution: the point of no return
• "You think he's too old 'cause he's a senior? Please. My boyfriend had a bicentennial."

The Buffy Boys have some serious questions about the American high school education system in the hard-boiled monster mystery that is S02E12 "Bad Eggs. If you've been affected by the issues raised in this Very Special Episode - well, sucks for you.

Key Buffy Bits from this episode include:

• S - E - X and the risk of pre-marital canoodling in American horror fiction

• Parental plasticity and the resilient Joyce/Buffy relationship

• Reflection: an ironically useful trope in building a portrait of a particular vampire

• B-Movie Sci-Fi homages and hat tips to Anytown, USA

• "you know, uh, you'll be fine. These gas things... will happen"

Yours in Slaying,

The Buffy Boys

Joyce meets a new man and sparks fly, but his fragmented behaviour just doesn't compute for Buffy. Will he learn that he's not being very user friendly or he just not wired that way? It's S02E11 "Ted"! Ted's a robot.

Key Buffy Bits from this episode include:

• Misogyny and Freudian tension through the lens of noted character actor John Ritter
• Handwaving fantasy physics: the 1950s robot with a floppy disk heart
• Structuring and integrating parallel narratives in genre fiction: the A, B, C and sometimes D plot
• The Scooby Gang and the Goshdarn Conundrum of Murdering Humans
• "Uh, her studies! Book-cracker Buffy. It's kind of her nickname"

The Buffy Boys are seeing double this week - four guns! It's S02E10 "What's My Line, Part Two". The Boys wade through the mire of problematic racial stereotypes and knotted gender politics to recognise the gem that is Kendra (No Last Name). This week she was our favourite Slayer. She was our only Slayer.

Key Buffy Bits from this episode include:

• Kendra as the anti-Buffy cipher for post-colonial and counter-intellectual tension
• An excessive amount of phallic objects and exaggerated penetrations
• Racism, black identity and problematic use and exploration of the 'tragic mulatta' literary stereotype
• The subaltern speaks: reclaiming the matriarchal power of African heritage through the Slayer line
• Angel/Spike slash fiction fodder galore - 'bad daddy' indeed
• "There are forty-three churches in Sunnydale? That seems a little excessive"

The Buffy Boys are seeing double this week - Two part episode! Two Slayers! It's S02E09 "What's My Line, Part One". The Boys line dance their way through some theory and say "Tarot!" to the oddest and most specific set of tarot cards going.

Key Buffy Bits from this episode include:

• Lorebuilding through deep dive narrative journeys: storytelling as exploration and reconstruction
• Highly problematic Jamaican accents which will not be imitated
• Teenage identity in the 90's: the disruption of the Information Age and the rise of the curated self-identity
• Splitting the Slayer line: queering the heteronormative framework by carving space for women's voices
• "It's worth nothing, Harris. Whatever comes out of your mouth is a meaningless waste of breath. An airborne toxic event."
