Buffy Boys

Buffy's just plain worn out y'all. Weakened emotionally and physically by her struggle with Angelus as well as a nasty flu she's laid up in Sunnydale General. As the fever rages she'll have to confront her childhood fear of hospitals (for very good reason it turns out) as well as an invisible, murderous creep (eye)stalking the children's wing.

The Buffy Boys are leaving balloons, chocolates, and non-committal 'Get Well Soon!' cards in S02E18 "Killed by Death".

Key Buffy Bits from this episode include:

• The Slayer versus Death - the cautionary value of fairy tales in a world with real monsters
• Paranoia and pacing: the nightmarish nature of inevitable threat
• Compassionate children, oblivious adults, and the horror in steam pipe basement
• "Tact is just not saying true stuff, I'll pass."

The Buffy Boys are watching through gritted fingers as Angelus's campaign of psychological terror reaches a tragic, though beautifully sketched, crescendo. The rose petals. The champagne. The only floppy disk you ever cared about.

Our hearts are literally beating. It's S02E17 "Passion".

Key Buffy Bits from this episode include:

• The death of Jenny Calendar - 'fridging' moment or elegy for a fully realised woman
• Changing the Locks: Buffy's lived representation of male violence and female resilience in a super-powered setting
• Flaming baseball bats!
• Recursive perversion and the souring soul of Angel's abusive obsession
• The hidden potency of garlic in the Buffyverse
• "I actually had to talk my grandmother into switching cars with me last night ."

Our hearts are literally beating. It's S02E17 "Passion".

It's Valentine's Day in Sunnydale High and a love spell goes terribly wrong, with hilarious and deadly consequences! You can actually pin-point the second when Xander's heart rips in half. The Buffy Boys wade into the choppy waters of magic, obsession, and consent and emerge, (thankfully) with literal rats only. It's S02E16 "Bewitched, Bothered and Bewildered".

• Female agency, witchcraft, and the farce of the male gaze
• The relative mouth feel of the Roman and Greek pantheons in the nomenclature of celestial bodies
• "If I can't have you, no one can" - love potions as the incel's 'monkey's-paw'
• The. Raincoat.
• "Th-that's it! This has gotta stop. It's time for me to act like a man. And hide."

The Scooby Gang have gotten themselves in another hairy situation as a werewolf is stalking lusty teens at Make-Out Point. They'll contend with feral, un-house-broken males of both the mystical and mundane variety - but is the true lycanthrope lying nearer than you would hope? In S02E15 "Phases" the Buffy Boys see a bad moon rising.

• Werewolves: metaphor for inevitable or just ingrained male aggression?
• Armoured Closet Gays and the fallacy of the closeted homophobe
• Angelus as abusive ex - emblematic gaslighting from beyond the grave
• "Yeah, okay, werewolf, but that's not all the time. I mean, three days out of the month I'm not much fun to be around either."

Yours in Slaying,

The Buffy Boys

In S02E14 "Innocence" one moment of perfect happiness costs Angel his soul and nothing will ever be the same again. It's a timeless tale of broken hearts, beautiful demons, and borrowed bazookas. The pain is gone and the Buffy Boys are feeling...just fine.

• To Kill the Girl You Have to Love Her - threat and dissolution of self emerging from the interpersonal rather than the supernatural
• Cursed birthdays - when the only thing worse than no-one coming to your party is when someone does
• Combative metrosexuality and boundary transgression: the destructive lust of Angelus
• The collapse of language: the vulnerability of the unnamed and unspeakable in the world of Slayer slang
• "So does looking at guns make you wanna have sex?"
