Buffy Boys

Mystically tainted candy (courtesy of Ethan Rayne) sends Sunnydale's adult population into an emotional time warp, reverting them to reckless teenage personalities. Can Buffy see through the Mayor's distraction to save some delicious babies from being a snake-demon's snack? The Buffy Boys are in another dimension, with voyeuristic intention - it's S03E06 "Band Candy".

Key Buffy Bits from this episode include:

• Disturbed second childhood: the inverted fairytale of the immature parental figures
• Anthony Stewart Head's natural north London accent and 90's lesbian fashion sense
• Sub-contracting Evil: the banality of work-a-day demonic forces in Sunnydale's middle American nightmare
• Untitled Goose Poems
• "Giles at sixteen? Less Together-Guy, more Bad-Magic-Hates-The-World-Ticking-Time-Bomb Guy."

The Buffy Boys are in another dimension, with voyeuristic intention - it's S03E06 "Band Candy".

It's open season on Slayers as vampire entrepreneur Mr. Trick uses all the technological innovation he can squeeze out of a VHS tape and some pagers to set bounty-hunting baddies on "Faith" (aka Cordy) and Buffy in the iconic 'Slayer Fest '98'. The Buffy Boys cast their vote in a race to the bottom - it's S03E05 "Homecoming".

Key Buffy Bits from this episode include:

• Bi by default: Deliberate versus procedural inclusion of queer storylines in videogames and interactive fiction
• One of Buffy's only surviving enemies - a yeehaw, rootin' tootin' vamp
• Cordelia as Buffy's prom queen Jungian shadow self from a life-which-could-have-been
• The introduction of Mayor Wilkins, the ultimate Daddy Issue
• "I'm not talking about the Slayer. I'm talking about Buffy. You've awakened the Prom Queen within. And that crown is going to be mine."

Something feral is loose in Sunnydale savaging affable emo teens and compassionate school counsellors alike. Is it Oz,the moon-crazed werewolf? Angel, the Hell-maddened reborn vampire? These hogs we've heard so much about?

The Buffy Boys drink the toxic masculinity Kool-Aid in S03E04 "Beauty and the Beasts".

Key Buffy Bits from this episode include:

• "Not All Monster-Men": uncovering the paper tiger of 'misandry' in Buffy fandom

• The many uses of a sturdy library book cage

• Two men talk about women's experience of domestic violence - a well-intentioned tightrope

• Metaphorical sharp relief - confrontation and catharsis fighting against personal demons made real

• "We're doing crime! You don't sneak up during crime!"

The Buffy Boys drink the toxic masculinity Kool-Aid in S03E04 "Beauty and the Beasts".

Buffy's back in school and normality returns. Just kiddin'. Faith, a newly called Slayer, arrives in town on the run from cloven-hoofed elder vampire Kakistos and his Y2K fearing techno-minion Mr. Trick. Will new "heterosexual" love interest Scott Hope get lost in the mix?

The Buffy Boys are five-by-five in S03E03 "Faith, Hope & Trick".

Key Buffy Bits from this episode include:

• Socially Acceptable Slayage - Buffy's "tightly wound" persona assimilates where Faith's emotional rough edges reject
• Reinforcing and creating lore through in-character continuity references
• "the Caucasian Persuasion here in the 'Dale": character, stereotypes and reinforcement in Buffy's infrequent black cast
• Joyce's curious love of McCain's oven chips
• "She's not playing with a full deck. She has almost no deck. She has a three."

The Buffy Boy's are five-by-five in S03E03 "Faith, Hope & Trick".

Buffy's doing her best to fit back into her old routine: study, slay, sleep, repeat. But it's tough when she's kicked out of school, her friends are giving her the cold shoulder and so are the zombies her mother accidentally reanimated with a demonic Nigerian art piece.

You bring the keg, buddy - the Buffy Boy's are the dip at S03E02 "Dead Man's Party".

Key Buffy Bits from this episode include:

• Zombi(e) Zeitgeist - the cultural influence of the restless reanimated from traditional Haitian folklore to its appropriation into Western science-myth
• The incredible BDE (British Dad Energy) of Giles protecting Buffy
• The interrupted sleep of the Slayer: vaseline-coated dreamscapes as a cryptic canvas
• "Chosen Family" - queer identity as a vector for community building in supernatural stories
• "Would you like me to convince you?"
