  • Buffy Boys 035 - Secret Identity (S03E01)

It's been one bummer of a summer for Buffy - living as a runaway under an assumed name in LA while the Scoobies try to fill her punning protector pumps in Sunnydale. But what'll happen when vulnerable teens get snatched to a brutalist Hell dimension by a youth pastor with a penchant for unsubtle foreshadowing?

Abandon hope all ye Buffy Boys who enter S03E01 "Anne".

Key Buffy Bits from this episode include:

    • Helping the hopeless: existential despair as a tangible threat in dispossessed youth
    • Xander and Cordelia's death fueled passion (Cordander? Xordy?)
    • Seizing the Means of Infernal Production: Marxist themes in Buffy's aesthetics and performed politics
    • "I'm Buffy, the Vampire Slayer. And you are?"

  • Buffy Boys 032 - The Secret of the Fishmonsters (S02E20)

Sunnydale High has got swim team fever! Something wet and wild is stalking the rising (sinking?) stars of their most successful sports team leaving nothing but steaming hot skin flaps and poor fashion choices behind. What does this have to do with the fall of the Soviet Union? You'll have to dive in and find out.

The Buffy Boys are up to their gills in S02E20 "Go Fish".

Key Buffy Bits from this episode include:

    • The male gaze and consent violation - plastering over lazy writing with condescending characterisation
    • My Mistress, the Sea: small-town fears, post-nuclear aquatic monsters
    • Only You Can Fight Forest Fires, and Vampires: Buffy's occasional moonlighting as a PSA spokesperson
    • "When you're nude? I meant to say changing."

  • Buffy Boys 031 - A Demon Named Love (S02E19)

It's a classic story: Boy loves girl, girl loves boy, girl is his high school teacher, they die in a murder-suicide shooting before the big dance in 1955, boy becomes poltergeist and recreates the tragedy by possessing innocents until a gender-swapped Angel/Buffy give them the cathartic forgiveness they need to escape the cycle of toxic masculinity and rage. How many times have we heard this one, honestly?

The Buffy Boys are haunting the punch bowl in S02E19 "I Only Have Eyes for You".

Key Buffy Bits from this episode include:

    • The Boys put trauma theory into practice by erasing their first attempt at this episode
    • The Déjà Vu of Grief: the supernatural amplification of recursive tragedy
    • Remixing the limitations of gender - Angel and Buffy's role-swapping and power dynamics
    • The Déjà Vu of Grief: the supernatural amplification of recursive tragedy
    • The land is haunted: the mythology of place and ownership in American horror
    • "Something weird is going on. Isn't that our school motto?"
