PRIORITY Q&A

Chris A.

Will there ever be a crossover of Archie Sonic, idw sonic and sonic the comic once everyone agrees to this?

Papadripopolous

I feel there's a generational divide in the fan and public reaction to Metal Gear.... Do you have any thoughts on this notion of a generational divide in the reception of this game series, and were you to do that story connecting MGSV and MG, would you lean more towards a Kojima-like real-life political commentary, or a game-lore 90s thriller approach?

Diane W.

Who do you think is the best thing to happen to Pokémon, Dawn (from Diamond & Pearl), Serena (from XY), or Lillie (from Sun & Moon)? For whatever answer you pick, do you think it was the best season of the Pokémon anime? If so, please explain why.

Scruffymatt

Quick question for you: did Thrash the Tasmanian Devil still exist post-Genesis Wave? We never saw him again after the Endangered Species arc. I was wondering whether he might have ever shown up again had the ArchieSonic series continued, or if he got Thanos'd out of existence like so many others did.

tKoS

In issue 44 of Sonic Universe (part 4 of Secret Freedom) there is a small scene that I thought was peculiar. While Silver and Shard are fighting Naugus, the latter realizes that Shard is a robot and asks Geoffrey to toss him his Chaos Emerald wand to crystallize him. I find this odd because I thought Naugus was capable of crystallizing things just fine without the need of it. So why did Naugus ask for his wand in order to do this?

This may be another case where you don't remember because it's been so long which I understand but I hope you can answer to the best of your ability.

STANDARD Q&A

PC-The-Unicorn

Ian, if you were given the chance, how do you think you would incoporate the Metarex and Cosmo in the IDW Sonic series?

Gawdzilla

More Kaiju in Sonic the Franchise yay or nay? And who wins in a Destroy All Monsters Brawl: Perfect Chaos, Ilbis, Biolizard, Metal/Master Overlord (gotta give the mecha some love), giant Zavok or Devil Doom?

Joseph T.

-[in] sonic issue 30, why did you hint knuxouge at the end(dreaklock tease), despite the fact she when gaga over his emerald the previous issue? Whats your stance on who rouge likes then between shadow and knuckles and who do you prefer her with?

We're back to one-a-week, full-Q&A episodes again. The experimentation continues!

PRIORITY Q&A

Papadripopolous

You mentioned you were, in a cancelled project, writing a story connecting MGSV to the first Metal Gear. Small question-can you give more information about that, about the project or about your idea itself?

BlueTidalGamer

-For Ian. Since Vanilla's debut in the Sonic series, we've known very little about her other than being Cream's mother and that she raised her to be polite and formal to others via strict teachings. We know nothing about the life she lives and we hardly get to see her do much other than appear in stories to give Cream a personal motivation. My question is, how would you personally approach a character like Vanilla to give her more of a background and something to do in her life?

-For Kyle. What are your personal top 5 favourite soundtracks from any video game?

Andrew D.

Priority Q&A: Did you have any plans for Mr. X after the Mega Man 6 adaptation? In the final issue, we see in a one page summary of the events of Mega Man 6 what seems to be Mr. X getting thrown into a portal.

tKoS

Hey Ian, I had been browsing through the old Q&A threads on the BKC forums via WayBack Machine and found an interesting question where someone asked you about the Power Gems. At the time you had answered that you would be touching upon them in the Encyclopedia. I checked as best as I could my copy of the Sonic Comic Encyclopedia for any entries about them and couldn't find any. I also checked any issues regarding them because I could've sworn it was said somewhere that they were created by Robotnik or were a mineral dug up but found neither.

So what do you think was the deal with the Power Gems? Were they manmade gems or were they something naturally occurring that could be found in the world?

NASB

How would you or another writer have tackled Katella the Huntress? She’s arguably more interesting than Breezie and her story is open-ended to continuation. I think she’s too ‘problematic’ to bring over other than in-name-only, or could that be circumvented successfully for fans?

STANDARD Q&A

Tik Tik

Thanks for clearing up the "two worlds" thing. My question for you now is have you ever felt the urge to just ask every question about game continuity you possibly could or do you feel that is a dangerous thing to do? Do you fear angering sega by pointing out their plot holes or are you afraid of the potential answers you get only opening up more questions?

Cassidy J.

STANDARD Q&A

PC-The-Unicorn

So Ian, in the 30 years later story line, Tails and Mina are together, which was launched off the 25 years later story line I think. Now I haven't read most of the issues before 160 but from what I heard from fans who have, Tails and Mina never really interacted that much and only had one like one moment that could have been taken as romantic. So I'm just wondering, even though the 30 years later storyline is an alterante timeline of the series, is the Tails and Mina romance would have been something you would have tried exploring/fleshing out?

Tik Tik

What exactly IS Lost Hex?

RedScarfUK

When writing the lyrics for Mina's songs, were they written with a tune in mind, and if so, what sort of tunes?

The Shadow Emperor

Ian, if you had gotten around to bringing back Bow Sparrow in the reboot universe, would he have retained his appearance and accent or would he have changed to differentiate him more from Rob o' the Hedge?

Jim J.

Do you think there is more of a chance to see Blaze and Silver team up in a battle or on a mission in the IDW comics than there was in the Archie comics? Their game counterparts are said to work well together, but Blaze and Silver shared few words in the Archie comics.

Big Sonic Fan Patrick

Why were there extreme claims that quote "The World Fell" during the last saga? I feel that it is misleading to claim the "WHOLE WORLD" fell to the Deadly Six since there are bound to be places out there unaffected by what happened. As the comic has shown places like Spiral Village were never affected by the events of Sonic Forces even though 99% of the world had fallen to the Eggman Empire. This suggests there are places that weren't affected by Dr Eggman at all in spite of his claims of ruling 99% of the world.

Akira T.

...I feel that SEGA is relying too much on their Sonic the Hedgehog IP to keep themselves afloat....Would you please mind sharing your thoughts on this matter? Thanks.

In Sonic 4, it is revealed that Metal Sonic was abandoned on Little Planet’s surface; throughout the entire time period between the events of Sonic CD and Episode Metal, he was supposedly out of commission. Papadripolous

Fans tend to interpret the Diamond Cutters, their mother base in an oil rig structure, their tactical espionage action life etc, as a reference to a certain game series directed by a japanese gentleman who's friends with Guillermo Del Toro. My question is, assuming this is intentional, was Sega aware, or did you sneak it by? But hold on, it's not over yet- if it was intentional, was it ALWAYS intentional, or did the idea just come after you saw people react to Whisper by pointing out she's a sniper wolf? Did you put your will to paper or allow yourself to let the memes come to life?

tKoS

Is it possible for non-echidna characters to be possessed by Enerjak? Could conditions to "become Enerjak" be met by characters with Chaos Powers such as Shadow or Mogul?

AWF

You wrote Mega Man. Did you ever really play? If so, what was your favorite game? Which boss do you remember giving you the hardest time? I hope this counts as one question.

Madeline SegaStar7

To Ian, I love the episode of Sonic Boom that you wrote, Anything You Can Do, I Can Do Worse-er. Its so cute! How did the plot for Sonic & Tails brotherly competition come to be? Were you given this story to write a script for, or did you come up with this story yourself?

Andrew D.

Did you have any plans for Mr. X after the Mega Man 6 adaptation? In the final issue, we see in a one page summary of the events of Mega Man 6 what seems to be Mr. X getting thrown into a portal.

Rachel W.

My question for you is, how do you get into/find a characters voice when you write dialogue? Are there any techniques you would recommend for this process?

Diane W.

What kind of plans would you have for Locke if SEGA didn’t order you to kill him off?

If the Archie Mega Man series had continued, how would you have written Mega Man nearly killing Wily in MM7?

I am a bit curious in regard to Eggmans badniks in the IDW comic: Like do all run on small animals? Even the ones that used not to like Egg Pawns and the other bots from Sonic Heroes? Which games are you not allowed to take badniks from? Either way keep up the good work!

shdowhunt60 (Ko-Fi)

With issue #29, discourse around a certain character has flared up. While I think it was a bit of an overreaction given the context, it feels like Tails as a character has gotten very little respect recently. What are your thoughts on his role in the franchise?

Ian, how familiar are you with the Ratchet & Clank series? I'm asking this cause it's my favorite video game series and franchise overall next to Sonic, and I think you would be an amazing writer for it especially with it's over the top humor and action if the series went back into comics. IF you know about the series, how would you make it into a comic story wise, or would you just adapt the games into a comic?

If Naugus's's magic turned Bunnie's cybernetic limbs organic, and turned nanite grass into real grass, as well as anything else it could have done that we never got to see due to the cancellation, wink wink hashtag knowing smile, could Naugus magic have "cured" the Metal Virus? If you had used the Metal Virus idea in the Archie comics, is this an event we could have eventually seen play out?

Scruffymatt

One of my favourite parts of IDW Sonic #29 was that Eggman got taken down by Froggy - I laughed so hard at that! That said, I was a little disappointed we didn't actually get to see Eggman finally getting a taste of his own medicine. My question is: in previous drafts of this issue's script, was there ever a version where we would have gotten to see Eggman fully transformed into a zombot? What about Amy, Tails and Espio?

AfroLuffyX

One missed opportunity That I thought In The Zombot Story arc are Zombots fusing with one another to form grotesque and Monsters versions of them, Was this idea strap during the planning stages of the Arc?

So I guess my question is: How were the Destructix able to travel outside of Mobius Prime with what appears to be a normal Warp Ring? And at the risk of sounding like a double question, what ever happened to Scourge's Super Charged Warp Ring? Basically I'm just asking for some clarification on the Warp Rings. Thanks!

Andrew D.

You’ve mentioned multiple times certain Sonic games being noncanon. Do you know a list of all games that are canon and noncanon?

Diane W.

Team Dark are not friends and are not affiliated with GUN in the modern games and IDW comics. Which brings me to this question; is Shadow still carrying out Maria’s wish to protect humanity and giving them a chance to be happy, or does he not care about Maria or her wish because he hates humanity according to SEGA? Sorry if I sounded a bit cynical there, I’m just still bothered by SEGA’s ideal characterisation of Shadow.

Mechanist Gamma (Ko-Fi)

Ive got a question when it comes to Ians view on the Sonic timeline - with Team Sonic Racing, does it come before or after Sonic Forces? If its after, will Team Sonic Racing be referenced at any point in IDW as taking place between stories?

Saturn Flicky

The JP SA1 guides say Tikals era was 3000 years ago. Battle says Emerl is 4000 years old. Chronicles says both were 4000 years ago. When you said Chronicles is non-canon, is this the official word from Sega? Should its timeline change & Echidna/Gizoid connection be disregarded?

If no life existed in Silver’s future before he returned to the past to help fight against the Metal Virus, then how was he born? Does changing the future mean that he is instead creating an alternate future and traveling to that new one and ultimately leaving his original doomed future behind somewhere to remain doomed? And regardless, when he returned to his future to see no life and sparse metallic plant life, I find it hard that he didn’t touch anything at all. Was he super duper cautious and didn’t touch anything, not even the ground, or was the Metal Virus no longer contagious at that point in time? Why would animal life deteriorate but not plant life?

Diane W.

In the future altered by King Sonic, Shadow was the one who took down the Eggman Empire and became a tyrannical ruler for the sake of world peace until Sonic, Tails, and Lara-Su ended his reign. What were the events in the altered future that led to Shadow destroying Eggman and his Empire and beginning his tyrannical rule?

Could Wisps be infected by the Metal Virus?

Ink Pants

Hi Ian. I was curious what your more personal thoughts might have been when you were gearing up to write Sally's multiple sacrifices (getting shot and roboticized) at the beginning of the Mecha Sally arc. Self-sacrifice screams Sally Acorn, but this was probably the single most devastating experience for the FF, and for many readers. I have to imagine that was a fairly painful/difficult story to write even with knowledge of how it would conclude. I know it punched a hole right through my heart.

Scruffymatt

There are a number of rom hacks available on the web which allow you to play Sonic games as different characters such as Shadow, Eggman, or Sally. There are even some official Sonic games where you can play as alternate characters, such as Knuckles in Sonic 2 or Tails in certain ports of Sonic CD.

Hey ian so I’m wondering is there going to be a tv show or game based on pre reboot Archie Sonic I mean everyone would really love that and you get to see your old characters again?

Could Wisps be infected by the Metal Virus?

If you could choose any past Sonic game - classic or otherwise - to be altered or modded so that you could play as Tangle or Whisper, what would you pick?

A few episodes ago Ian said that IDW Eggman is not related to IDW Gerald. What's the story behind this? Personal thing? Sega policy? What's up?

PRIORITY Q&A

Andrew D.

In the story, “Eggman’s Day Off”, from Sonic Annual 2020, Dr. Starline is looking at events happening through portals from the Warp Topaz. Were these events happening simultaneously? Also, those events took place after Dr. Starline had already started to have doubts about working for Dr. Eggman, yet in this story he still seems to be a big fanboy. Would you say this story takes place before the events seen in the portals and ignore the contents of what was seen, or would you say this takes place after those events seen in the portals and ignore Dr. Starline’s unwavering admiration of Dr. Eggman? Or perhaps you might have a different solution altogether?

Since Webtoon series like tower of god and god of high school managed to have anime adaptations with the help of Crunchyroll, how would you feel If webtoon come to you and talk about Drogune getting animated series?

I know by the time I’m Writing this question there isn’t that much material to adapt, but! would you gave the staff The outline of the story you planned or allowed to staff to do their own thing with the material and how much creative input would you do?

Koopaling Krew

I know that Sonic is "the fastest thing alive". And Shadow seems to be about on par with Sonic's speed consistently. But I've noticed that his shoes have these sort of "boosters" on the soles whenever he runs. So my question to you is, is Shadow as fast as Sonic because of the aid of his special shoes? Or is Shadow naturally as fast as Sonic and his shoes' functions are for a different purpose?

A hypothetical question for you this week: if the Sonic cast decided to have a go at playing Dungeons and Dragons (or any other kind of tabletop RPG), what race and class do you think each of them would play? Would Tails be the dungeon master, or do you think someone else would better fit that role?

On a semi-related note, I'm curious as to whether Bumblekwest is still happening at some point in the future?
