PRIORITY Q&A

Andrew D.

In issue 14, Silver holds Metal Sonic in place with his psychokinesis, so how is it that Metal Sonic falls through the warp hole that Dr. Starline opens beneath him if he’s being held? The only thing I can think of is that Silver’s psychokinetic hold acted more like pushing Metal Sonic downward, but that wouldn’t seem to line up with what we’ve seen of his psychokinesis before.

Do you think hellboy deserves a tv show just like the mask whether it be animated or live action?

If Sonic Boom got a season 3, what would you want from it?

Do you think some characteristics, like Silver in TSR Mighty in Mania Adventures and Fang, Bean and Bark being labeled Hooligans, were inspired or even nods to your work over the comics?

Ian, why do Archie Sonic fans refuse to accept that IDW Sonic will never turn into Archie Sonic, especially since S.O.J. and Sonic Team made it very clear for 27 years that they don't want Sally & Freedom Fighters & won't make them canon to their video games or in movie Sonic?

Taryn Urban (Ko-Fi)

Hi Ian and Kyle! Ian, thanks for your tremendous work on Sonic and breathing new life into a series I've adored since childhood. My question is: what field of study is Dr. Starline's PhD in?

Silly Rookie (Ko-Fi)

Hiya! What do you feel is the most important lesson you've learned about your creative medium? Specifically outside of the work-for-hire factors, I'm more asking about the craft.

Papdripopolous

Have you ever gotten any internal notes from Archie or IDW or Sega going "Some exec heard you or your podcast co-host said X badly about them, or said Y and caused a lot of fans to insult us" and gotten in hot water over it?

Scruffymatt

What do the two of you think presidential campaigns from the modern day versions of Sonic and Eggman would be like?

Sapphire Scarletta

Ian, If Tangle and Whisper had anti-mobius counterparts, what would their names be along with their personality and story?

Diane W.

SEGA says that the Hero Path in Shadow the Hedgehog is the canon pathway...Any thoughts on this?

AWF

Human x Mobian relationships. How do you think they'd be viewed in-world? Would they be biologically compatible? Would the offspring be one or the other species, or some kind of freaky mutant monster?

Scurvy Piratehog (Ko-Fi)

What would be the names of the zone cop counterparts of the Deadly Six, Zavok and so on?

AwesomeCakester

is Maria still canon?

Andrew D.

Can a Power Core run out of whatever it runs on? If so, how would Dr. Starline recharge his new Tricore, or would he have to replace it?

What was the reason for [Tikhaos] being fused into one being (if there was one), and how did the idea of Tikhaos come into being?

In the IDW universe of Sonic, does Knuckles ever ask people to look over the master emerald when he's away from it similar to how he did in the Archie Sonic continuity?

Priority Q&A

HedgeWolf23

In Issue 3 of the IDW comics, Knuckles and Sonic rescue a town that Rough and Tumble had taken over. They are first greeted by a dog who had his Drill Wispon stolen. (Just in case, here are some pics of him: https://imgur.com/a/Jj4lhLu) He reminds me a lot of Ben Muttski. Was Muttski an inspiration for this character, and also, what is his name?

Chris A.

Have you read any jojo’s bizarre adventure manga because if so who is your favorite jojo in the series?

N’Oni

I had a bit of a curiosity about Zavok's cell accommodations. He seems the type that could quite easily just break the iron bars before going on a tear through of the prison before leaving. Is there a reason for this? Like, do the Hover Guns prevent runaways by getting them suspended in air, or is there a set of tranquillizer darts that they couldn't gather together for the guy fast enough? Why didn't he break the bars, I guess, is what I'm asking.

AWF

Do Mobians consider the term "furry" to be a sort of slur? And if Mobians had their own colloquial term for humans, what would it be?

The Shadow Emperor (Ko-Fi)

During the first issue of Endangered Species (StH #243), it's revealed that some members of the Lost Tribe are still alive in Albion. Was the decision to have some survivors influenced by fan reaction to the tribe getting killed off after achieving their goal of reaching Albion?

SonAmy Channel (Ko-Fi)

Ian, do you believe there's still a chance that SEGA or Sonic Team will allow you or Evan Stanley to use Sticks the Badger in IDW Sonic? If not, can you tell us what your plans were in how you were going to establish Sticks as Amy's best female friend and her role in IDW Sonic?

Amy Rose (Ko-Fi)

I am aware SEGA has requested a distinction between "classic" and "modern" Sonic. My question is: does Honey the Cat count as a "classic" character? (Not asking if she will appear in the comics! I know that's a secret. Rather, I'm curious if she's allowed to at all!) Thanks

Tvguru (Ko-Fi)

Awhile ago you said Marine wasn’t allowed to show up in the comic for a specific reason. May we know what it was? Also do you know if Club Rouge can still be a thing?

PRIORITY Q&A

Andrew D.

This question is for both of you. Since a future Smash Bros game most likely won’t have the enormous roster that it currently has, what sort of thing would you like to see in order to make it a true successor that won’t pale in comparison to its predecessor? For example, would you overhaul the battle system, take the series in a new direction somehow, or just plow forward and hope people will like it despite what it will most likely be lacking?

SapphireScarletta (via Ko-Fi)

Hi ian & kyle! I have a question, what are your thoughts on infinite as a villain & as a character.do you think he had a deeper reason as to why he wanted to destroy the world? & if you were task on giving him a full story arc, what kind of story & personality would you give him?

Ink Pants

Patrick Spaziante's work on Archie Sonic was formidable, and he was arguably one of the most iconic artists on the team. What's your favorite piece from him that you've been involved with? Also, is there a chance we'll ever see him on IDW Sonic? I miss the guy almost as much as I miss the Freedom Fighters.

Scurvy piratehog (via Ko-Fi)

-To Ian:. So...do you have any advice for the people who want to see (Sally Acorn) join IDW?

-To Kyle: Are there any video games that have hit you emotionally?

N’Oni

-Had a question about Starline! Are you ever going to delve more into what his background was like before trying to join the Eggman Empire? Any family, friends, people they've sworn to "show them, show them all" to?

-For Kyle: What's your favorite crack ship? No judgements, honest curiosity.

AWF

Have you ever sat back and watched any of those anti-Flynn videos by any of those popular sonictuber personalities? A lot of the ones who've made videos about you actually made some about me one time, so I was wondering if you've ever seen your own, or have an opinion. If you have, which ones your favorite?

STANDARD Q&A

Gawdzilla

So my question is two fold: what kind of Sonic zone aesthetics are your personal favorites? And which type of Zone aesthetic would you like the franchise to revisit?

Sgt Byrd

Big is actually my favorite Sonic character just due to the comedy but also heart he brings to the table. Ian, if you were to write a legitimately serious story focused on Big without betraying the character, how do you think you would go about it?

PRIORITY Q&A

N’Oni

I've been binging a bit of sonic games, and I've noticed that a lot of more 'interesting' stores are either run by chao, I.E. The black market. Is there a reason such adorable critters seem to fall into a potentially life threatening career? Are they predisposed to being merchants, and just a few of them take things a bit far? Is there anything from Sega explaining this particular bit of chao background? I guess what I'm asking is, who taught the babies crime? Addendum: Also, who taught them how to use heavy machinery?? Have they always been this smart, or are these special cases?

Scruffymatt

Ian and Kyle, oh wise and knowledgeable sages of truth, I have a problem. Every night I lay awake, trying to figure out the answer to one question, and one question only. I have been tormented with many sleepless nights in pursuit of this answer, and now I turn to you both in my hour of need. Gentlemen, you are my last hope. Please tell me, what is the answer to this question: Who is the best Darkwing Duck Villain? Is it Megavolt, Steelbeak or Nega Duck? I can't choooooooose!

Papadripopolous

Ian- Iizuka's repeatedly said the Chaotix were rebooted in 2003, you've mentioned often having issues particularly using material from the game Chaotix, and if you read the Japanese manual's character descriptions, it becomes clear that the characters are just too drastically different from their 2003-onward versions to work as a cohesive interpretation. Do you think in a classic sonic book, such as the minisseries IDW announced that IIRC hasn't been confirmed whether you're writing it or not, but do you think they'd allow the Chaotix to appear? Or would the use of the classic Chaotix cause too much conflict with the modern interpretations? Would they allow it if it were the classic designs, but modern personalities? etc, just asking you to guess from your experience

Andrew D.

Are there any events or lore from past games that you wanted to explore or expand upon but was told you couldn’t? If so, can you say what they were? Some things I’d love to see explored are why one of the seven Chaos Emeralds were missing until Sonic 2, what the Hidden Palace Zone on Westside Island was for, and why the plans for the Death Egg II from Fighters was seemingly scrapped until the Death Egg mk. II in Sonic 4. There are a whole bunch of unexplained bits in the past that are ripe for exploring.

If one were to make a Reading Order for IDW Sonic, where would you say the best spot to put the 2020 Annual would be?

Andrew D.

I’m a bit confused on what is considered an idea from older media or a new idea. For example, the Sonic video game series introduced the concept of Metal counterparts with Metal Sonic and Metal Knuckles, but the Archie comics introduced Metal Tails and Metal Amy. Does that mean that they could potentially return in the IDW comics, or would they be off limits? I’m assuming special cases like this might allow for them to return with a redesigned look like with E-107 Theta, who returned with a new look. And speaking of Theta, did you pick Theta as a hint to say certain characters from Archie could return if they are redesigned, especially ones who were seemingly previously off limits?

Do the Zeti exists in pre reboot Archie sonic? Do the swat bots exist in idw Sonic along with the roboticizer?

Andrew D.

Between what issues/event does the Bad Guys mini series take place?

Ink Pants

Ian, my favorite son. Can you tell us how your involvement in the new Sonic Encyclopedia came about and any cool anecdotes about your work on it? It must have been a really exciting prospect to work on something so aligned with the games. Did you ever picture yourself getting this kind of opportunity back on your humble beginning at Archie?

AWF

How much input does a writer have over the art of a comic, like the line work and colors? If I'm not mistaken, Evan has done some of her own line work for the issues she's written (more power to her, her art is amazing), but if an issue looks good in terms of colors and shading, so on, how much of that is credible to the writer?

Papadripopolous

Is there something to the sudden Sonic X mentions? Did you just happen to rewatch it recently and went "hmm I wanna use this stuff"? also, as seen in the new york comic con stream, you got a decently nice beard going, time to update those profile pictures and so on to reflect that

Soni

Can I just take this moment to say thank you Ian, truly! As someone who truly believed that the Zeti has a place in the world of Sonic despite many people saying otherwise, I am so happy with how you wrote him in the first issue of Bad Guys! I would gladly pay poutine for you! Speaking of, have you tried poutine?

N’Oni

To Ian: How old is Chaos mentally/emotionally? If you don't know the concrete answer, do you have a headcanon for his age? Did Sega ever even have notes on that?

Kyle: Seeing how we're in the spooky month, why not ask about something that's truly terrifying. Are there any video games you will never give another chance no matter what, due to their content? This includes File Eating bugs, and glitches that could corrupt the entire save.

BlueTidalGamer

Ian: I've been really enjoying how you have approached the Deadly Six in the IDW series so far compared to how they were in their introduction in Sonic Lost World, especially Zavok. I do think that Zavok has potential to be a better villain than how the games portray him as, and after Bad Guys Issue 1, I'm really excited to see how he and Dr. Starline will clash. What are some of the challenges you've had (during COVID) and how did you overcome them?

tKoS

Are the Chaos Emeralds sentient like the Sol Emeralds? Have you gotten anything from SEGA/Sonic Team about this?

Andrew D.

In the description of issue 12, it mentions that it is the conclusion to the Battle of Angel Island saga. Is this referring to the four issue arc of issues 9-12, or of the whole overarching saga of issues 1-12?

Papadripopolos

...how familiar are you with Euro comics?

Scruffymatt

I was wondering about the Babylon Rogues. Do you know if the flames on their arms are tattoos, or what the design choice was there? Also, do you think that they would work in one of the Racing titles like Transformed or TSR? I guess it would seem a little odd to not have them on their extreme gear, but on the other hand, racing is kind of their whole deal.

N’Oni

since the power of the Cacophonic Conch only lasts as long as you can blow it, is it possible to record the sound and still have it work? Is that why neither Starline or Eggman have tried, or is that more of a hubris thing?

AWF

Do you think today's instant gratification centered mindset has had a negative impact on how people view comics? There didn't seem to be as much complaining back when people were used to waiting a week for a new episode of their favorite show, or a whole month to see what was going to happen in their favorite comics, but with today's highly accessable digital market and on-demand media, do you think that plays into why people get so upset when something happens that they don't like in a comic? Because they have to wait "so long" to see what happens next, that they become disgruntled and start finding faults in every little thing? Basically, are people just spoiled?

SonAmy Channel (KoFi)

Ian, will classic Amy Rose be in the upcoming IDW Classic Sonic comic mini-series next year for the 30th Sonic Anniversary? If so, will it be explained where classic Amy was and what she was doing during the events of Sonic Mania and Sonic Forces?

For both Ian and Kyle: If you could insert yourself as a character in the Sonic universe, what species would you be and why?

Tik Tik

Now that modern merchandise for Super Tails exists, do you think you would approach using other super characters, or would you still avoid trying just to play it safe?

Gawdzilla

Shadow seems to be the character everyone has an opinion on these days, especially comparing the Archie days to IDW. I think the part people tend to overlook is the impact Hope Kintobor had on Shadow in the Archie run as almost a “therapy human”/Maria 2.0 for him while the Shadow of the Games/IDW just had to move on from his past on his own. In retrospect, do you think that Hope’s presence may have hindered Archie’s Shadow’s healing progress more than helped?

Mike B.

Do you think the freedom fighters, in their most current iteration, are better suited to go along with the game cast but have more supportive roles or do their own thing with the game cast supporting them from time to time?

Liam B.

Why was it chosen that Sally had to see somebody else (Monkey Kahn) in order to realize that she wanted to be with Sonic again? How does the time progression in that scenario work?

starline simp for life

Hey Ian, as someone who absolutely loves #HarleyQuinn and #drstarline I couldn't help but notice the similiarities between them (these two being the most noticable of the parallels) @BumbleKast were you inspired by Harley or the BTAS story Mad Love when writing Starline? https://twitter.com/smoresboi/status/1297597592042315776?s=20 Note: Tweet linked as it contains pictures for context.

I don't know if this has been asked before but what was the writing process for you contributions to the IDW TMNT comic like? Did you have to break the stories with Tom Waltz?

Breezy

There’s been a lot of animosity directed at recent portrayals in the comics: Shadow for being an arrogant jerk and Tails for cowering in fear as he does before Chaos 0 in Forces. A lot of naysayers have pointing fingers at Ian for this, which is unfair because I know he cares about the (proper) personality and characterization of the cast just like the rest of us. Would you mind clearing up any misinformation on this?

For characters based on video game properties (specially long-running ones), how do you balance which abilities are they able to use in a story?

I imagine this was much easier for Mega Man,

Has there ever been a moment where you found yourself really hitting a wall in your Sonic writing (Archie or IDW) that was just preventing you from making any progress, and how did you overcome it?

Scruffymatt

I've got a hypothetical question for you today. In IDW Sonic #29 we saw Sonic and Silver transform into their super forms at the last second and save the day. What I'm wondering is... what would have happened had Zavok been just that little bit quicker and managed to stop them?

tKoS

There have been a few things you've told us that were originally intended for Archie reboot, such as the Metal Virus and Mimic. It makes me curious to know if there's anything else we've seen so far in IDW that was intended for Archie? Or even things that appeared in reboot but were originally planned for pre-reboot?

IanWaffles

...I don’t think you’ve ever truly topped your work on Eggman during the Pre reboot days of archie... Would you agree with this observation or do you think IDW Eggman is portrayed the same as his archie counterpart? And what has informed the way you write the character in both series? Do you think you ever went to far?

AWF

I'm just going to ask what everyone's thinking and chuckle when I get an ambiguous, dismissive answer. So.. when is Tangle and Whisper's wedding?

Groovy[K]2000

It's been stated in the Sonic Comic encyclopedia that the original robotnik was the only one erased by the ultimate annihlator thanks to Snively targeting his DNA. If that's the case, then why did Sonic need to be saved by the billionth ring? We see him escape that void of nothingness and come back to life thanks to the ring.
