Fitz's Recruiting Update
Before we dive into the football content, we will start with our weekly recruiting update from industry expert Sean Fitz. With the bye week giving the team extra time to check out commits over the weekend, Fitz has a report on which players the team prioritized on Friday and Saturday. He'll also recap the latest movement in the On300 rankings update for the 2026 recruiting cycle.
The junior seasons for many of Penn State's top targets are nearing their conclusions. Is there a group of targets starting to emerge? We'll discuss where the team's commits and regional targets rank after the fresh update.
Penn State kicks off Wisconsin Week
Today, we'll discuss Franklin's conversation with the media on Monday afternoon. Franklin spoke for nearly 40 minutes on Monday to preview the upcoming game and discuss the state of his team coming out of the bye week.
Among the reoccurring topics from Monday include Quinton Martin's redshirt status, the team's run game efficiency, and KJ Winston's potential availability for the rest of the year. What did Franklin say about these topics? We'll discuss and dive deeper on your questions and comments during the live show.
BWI Mailbag
Finally, we end the show with your questions and comments in the BWI Mailbag. If you'd like to submit a question for the show to be featured on the segment, subscribe to Blue White Illustrated and check out the Mailbag Submission Thread on Monday night or Tuesday morning before the show. We take the best questions from the chat that we can answer on the show and discuss them. We'll also take questions from the live chat. Today's topics include Tom Allen's defensive adjustments at halftime, linebacker depth, and a preview of the most challenging aspects of the Wisconsin offense and defense.

An all-new episode of the Penn State Wrestling Show from Blue-White Illustrated is now live! The Nittany Lions sit one month away from starting their 2024-2025 regular season with Drexel on Nov. 17 at Rec Hall. Of course, there is plenty for host Thomas Frank Carr and reporter Greg Pickel to cover in the leadup to that.
This week's episode starts with a look at the NWCA All-Star Classic. Defending 285-pound NCAA champion Greg Kerkvliet, the No. 1 ranked wrestler at heavyweight, was set to face No. 3 Nick Feldman of Ohio State on Nov. 16 at Rec Hall. However, Iowa State announced Wednesday that its own heavyweight, No. 6 Yonger Bastida, would be facing Feldman instead. Flo Wrestling, which runs the event, quietly updated its bout sheet to reflect that the Cyclone is replacing Kerkvliet but has otherwise said nothing about the sudden change.
Last year, Clay Clarson of South Dakota State was scratched from the exhibition event, sat out the first six weeks of the season due to injury, and was never right during the 2023-2024 season. Conversely, Levi Haines and Jacori Teemer also both scratched off of last year's original Classic bout sheet. But, they both wrestled all year, and Haines beat Teemer, then of Iowa and now of Arizona State, in the NCAA finals. But, they withdrew after the Journeymen Classic, not before. With all of that said, PSU posted a photo of Kerkvliet wrestling hours before this news broke. And, he has been frequently featured on the team's social media account.
With no concrete news to share on Kerkvliet's status moving forward, Pickel and Carr discuss what it all might mean moving forward.

The Penn State Nittany Lions are on a bye this week, which means the coaching staff is out on the road recruiting. More importantly, the team's final stretch to convince top recruits in 2025 to join the program is here. In just a few weeks, the team will host Ohio State, followed by the annual White Out game. We preview the upcoming recruiting push on today's BWI Live Recruiting Show. Join lead experts Ryan Snyder and Sean Fitz as they discuss the important landmarks along the way to the early signing day in December.
Join the BWI Live Recruiting show every Thursday at 10 a.m. on YouTube or catch the replay on the channel, our site, or wherever you get podcasts. The final word on Penn State flip Josh Johnson
Penn State flipped three-star cornerback Josh Johnson from Louisville on Monday evening after missing out on his commitment in the summer. While we've discussed Johnson's decision in-depth this week, we'll revisit the topic one final time. On3 Director of Recruiting Charles Power spoke with Snyder this week about Johnson and what he sees in the commitment. We'll review his thoughts.
Speaking of Power, the latest On300 update for the Class of 2025 came out recently, and there was plenty to discuss among the players in the class. We'll review who moved up and down in the latest update as the class rounds into its final destination in early December.
Coaches on the road
The bye week means that there's more time to recruit. But with new rules curtailing the number of days that college football coaching staffs can be on the road, how much will the group be out in force? We discuss the latest news and what our experts can share on today's show.
But the bye week isn't the most significant event on the calendar to end the 2024 season. November is just around the corner, and with it, two of the most essential home games on the recruiting calendar. Penn State hosts Ohio State on Nov. 2 and then Washington for the White Out on Nov. 9. Snyder has been talking about these games since the beginning of the year, and today, we'll take a more extended look at the team's recruiting lists he's confirmed so far.

The Penn State Nittany Lions football team is 6-0 and in the middle of it's second bye week of the 2024 season. It's a good time to have a bye, too, says head coach James Franklin. Now that the team is at the halfway point of the regular season, we're handing out midseason grades for the entire team. Join the BWI Live Show today at 10 a.m. to give your thoughts on how each position group is performing, where they can stand to improve, or why they're getting top marks.

Penn State practice update
The team hosted its weekly media session on Tuesday of its second bye week, and Blue White Illustrated was there to observe and report. On today's show, we discuss the nature of this week's practice and why Penn State eased up on the pace this week compared to previous bye weeks.
Next, we'll discuss what Penn State head coach James Franklin said after practice. While it's his least favorite topic, Franklin discussed injuries and the situation at punter return with Kaden Saunders and Zion Tracy.
Also, after a big game, quarterback Drew Allar was a significant topic Tuesday night. Franklin gave the entire quarterback operation credit for the success.
"I think [QB Coach] Danny's [O'Brien] done a really good job of spending time and building trust and having kind of a demeanor on the sideline that I think has been really good for him as well. And then [offensive coordinator] Andy [Kotelnicki] is doing a really good job of playing to Drew's strengths as well as playing to our personnel strengths. I think it's a combination of all those things."
Midseason report card
Today's show topic is also derived from Franklin's comments last night. He felt that the bye week after the USC game was a very good time in the season and under the right circumstances.
"I just think when you talk about the middle of the season, game six, it's a good point to have a bye. Sometimes you get a bye really early, sometimes you get a bye late, and not the best position for the bye to land, but this is at a good point. And then, obviously coming off a win, I'd probably feel very different if we hadn't come off a win."
So, we'll take the midseason point as an opportunity to evaluate the team's performance so far with position-by-position grades. Want to give your grades? Join the conversation in the comments section, or discuss on the Blue White Illustrated message board.

Penn State practice preview
Penn State's bye week changes the weekly schedule slightly, so the Nittany Lions will open practice to the media on Tuesday night instead of its weekly Wednesday showcase. What are we expecting to see and hear tonight? We'll preview the bye week events to kick off the show.
Next, we'll get into the latest and hottest Penn State recruiting news from this past weekend. The team secured the commitment of Johnson, a Louisville commit that the team targeted early in the recruiting process but ultimately lost in June. Despite that close battle, the Nittany Lions won out this week in flipping the three-star defensive back. We'll discuss the team's recruiting efforts with Fitz and what he makes of the situation.
USC Recap
The team traveled to the West Coast and did what few East Coast and Midwest Big Ten teams have done so far this year: win. What went into the victory? What are the biggest takeaways from the offensive and defensive performances? We'll discuss those topics, plus your comments during our recap of Penn State's win over USC from Saturday.
One of the biggest questions coming out of the game is about the mentality and potential of this team. Was that game a turning point for the Nittany Lions that can propel them to unseen heights under head coach James Franklin? We'll tackle that topic.
BWI Mailbag
Finally, we'll dig into your questions and thoughts on the weekly BWI Mailbag. We've collected questions from the Blue White Illustrated message board to feature on the show, but your questions are always welcome in the live chat! Today, we'll discuss the most improved players this season, the effect that sideline technology has on the team's in-game adjustments, and more! Join us to add your thoughts! It was one of the most dramatic games of the last several seasons, but Penn State Football pulled out an overtime win over the USC Trojans on the road, 33-30. Join the LaBatt Postgame Show tp discuss the win and your thought about how the team played in the back-and-forth affair.
Blue White Illustrated publisher Sean Fitz joins us for the first time this year to discuss what he saw and the important players, moments, and implications of the win. If you haven't yet, subscribe to the Blue White Illustrated YouTube Channel so you don't miss any of our great postgame content.
Penn State is still a second half team
It was another sleepy start to the game for the Nittany Lions. Penn State got out to a slow start in the first half, managing just six points in the first two quarters while allowing 20 through the first two frames But not all slow starts are the same.
The team marched down the field on the opening drive, but a penalty on fourth and goal negated a Tyler Warren touchdown. Later, the team drove down into the red zone again but failed to punch the ball into the end zone.
Defensively, Penn state failed to keep a lid on the big plays from USC early on. Specifically, the Penn State run defense was leaky, allowing 147 rushing yards in the first half. That mark included a 75-yard end-around for a touchdown to start off the scoring for USC.
However, the defense executed their usual second-half adjustments, allowing just three yards in the third quarter.
Allar fights through adversity
It was a breakout performance among a season of standout performances for Warren. The Penn State tight end saw the ball early and often in the matchup with USC, finishing the game with 17 catches for 224 yards and a touchdown. Most impressivley, 151 of those yards came after the catch.
However, the most impressive performance of the night may have come from quarterback Drew Allar. The third-year quarterback threw two interceptions during the game, but fought back to command a drive of the ages for the Penn State offense. Down by seven points with just six minutes left in the game, Allar and his offense went nine plays for 75 yards, including two fourth-down conversions and a 14-yard touchdown strike to Nick Singleton to cap off the performance.
After two stops by the defense to end regulation and then force a missed field goal in overtime, Penn State's Ryan Barker kicked the winning field goal.

A new Penn State wrestling show from Blue-White Illustrated is now live! The defending NCAA champion Nittany Lions are now just 38 days away from their first dual meet of the season. Host Thomas Frank Carr and reporter Greg Pickel start this week's episode by breaking down the schedule. From there, they dive into a list of early Hodge Trophy contenders. The show concludes with the latest recruiting news.
Penn State has seven home dates on its regular season schedule. It will wrestle foes at the Bryce Jordan Center. The Lions will make the trek across campus to host Iowa inside of the nearly 16,000-seat venue on Fri., Jan. 31. It will then host Michigan there on Fri., Feb. 7. Did the program make the right call to feature those two opponents at the BJC? Pickel and Carr discuss. They then move onto the Collegiate Wrestlign Duals. On Dec. 22, the Lions will face Binghamton, Little Rock, and Missouri. What will those bouts tell us about head coach Cael Sanderson's team ahead of the start of Big Ten action in early January? Pickel and Carr discuss that, as well. You can see the full schedule below.
