Penn State football kicked off the 2023 season and didn't disappoint. The Nittany Lions defeated the West Virginia Mountaineers on the arm of new starting quarterback Drew Allar. Join the BWI Live Postgame Show to discuss the season-opening win for head coach James Franklin and his team.
We'll discuss Allar's 300-plus, multi-touchdown day and how he played in his first start. Join the BWI Live show on YouTube immediately following the game. Subscribe so you don't miss any live content from BWI.
Penn State entered halftime up 14-7 but the Nittany Lions drove down into the redzone twice and came away with zero points due to missed field goals from Sander Sahaydak, who lost his job at halftime to transfer kicker Alex Felkins.
Despite the fanfare of Nick Singleton and Kaytron Allen coming into the game, Allar was the star. The first-time starter showed great poise and vision during his debute, completing over 70% of his passes on the night. Allar finished the game with 325 yards and three touchdowns. But Allar didn't compile short passes to get his yards. He averaged 15.5 yards per completion, pushing the ball downfield.
On the other hand, the offensive run game played the efficient supporting role against the Mountaineer defense. Allen and Singleton combined for 121 yards and a touchdown on 23 combined carries. The offensive line opened impressive holes and put in a positive effort to start the season.

The Penn State defense, a highly-touted group of playmakers, got off to a rocky start. The defense only gave up seven points by halftime but gave up 69 yards in the first two quarters. West Virginia was also aggressive on the night, going for five fourth downs during the competitive portion of the game and making two short conversions.

Five Things to Watch: Defense
The West Virginia Mountaineers bring a dangerous running game to Happy Valley on Saturday, and we'll break it down from the bedrock of the system to the top. Here's a snippet from this week's explanation of the running game and passing game with quarterback Garrett Greene.
The zone running scheme, especially outside zone, is essential to fold into the passing conversation. A large portion of the West Virginia offense last year was built around the RPO and read-option concepts off of the running game.
The outside zone is an aggressive lateral rushing attack that forces the defense to flow in one direction with the offensive line. West Virginia’s line is good enough that you have to respect their ability to out-gap you up front. But off the back of this system, head coach and offensive coordinator Neal Brown pairs these secondary concepts. This causes a shearing effect on the defense, where most defenders have to follow the play. But the backside corners and safeties are still responsible for the screen game. Next, the offense adds Greene’s rushing ability slows down backside pursuit from the unblocked defender as well.
On today's show we'll break down these concepts with visuals and then build off of that to explain how the Mountaineers passing attack functions with Greene at quarterback. Finally, we'll explain how Chop Robinson, Kalen King, Abdul Carter, Curtis Jacobs and the rest of the Penn State defense can make West Virginia one-dimensional.

Penn State News
In an unfortunate update, Penn State will be without Tengwall's services for the remainder of the season. The third-year offensive lineman is stepping away from football due to an injury.
"It is with a heavy heart that I am announcing my retirement from Football. Unfortunately, I have sustained an injury that will not allow me to safely continue to play the game I love, and that has given me so much," Tengwall announced in a statement on social media Wednesday night.
Fitz and Bauer will react to the news and explain how the team will move forward without Tengwall in a season that promised progress up front.
Next, they'll discuss the other news that Franklin detailed in his press conference on Wednesday evening. The final tuneups for the season opener are taking place this week but the media got a chance to see how those were going on Wednesday. Fitz and Bauer were at practice and give their impression of the offense's progress.

Penn State vs West Virginia Game Preview | Practice recap
Hosted by Simplecast, an AdsWizz company. See pcm.adswizz.com for information about our collection and use of personal data for advertising.
Penn State linebacker Curtis Jacobs joins Thomas Frank Carr to discuss training camp, his teammate's progression this offseason, and preview the game against West Virginia on Sept. 2. They discuss Kobe King's advances as a linebacker, and Jacobs gives his thoughts on the offense and how the young quarterbacks have progressed. He also shares how Manny Diaz coaches his players to understand things from an emotional and tactical level.
Check out the video here or on the Blue White Illustrated YouTube Channel. Get ready for game day by subscribing to Blue White Illustrated. We'll be hosting a live 90-minute tailgate show with former Penn State defensive tackle Aeneas Hawkins three hours before each home game.
There's no doubt that Penn State's defense has gotten praise this offseason from local and national media. It's a talented group of players, and Jacobs says that while he's pleased with how training camp went, now is when the real fun starts.
"I'm feeling great. This is my favorite part; being able to get out there and compete good-on-good.
Now it's even better. We get to actually hit quarterbacks, get on the field, and really be violent. I'm excited to show off what this defense can do."
He also gave a scouting report on the Mountaineers offense and what he's seen from the groups he focuses on.
"I think they have a really good offense; Very athletic and a great quarterback. He's good at seeing things, and he likes to take off. He's really good with his feet. Also, I always take a deep dive into running backs and tight ends; those two groups look really good," Jacobs said.
Jacobs says that the Penn State defensive tackles, the group under the hottest spotlight this offseason, are playing with a chip on their shoulder. After a month of internal competition, the defense is ready to go up against a strong running game from West Virginia.
"I have tremendous faith in my D-line and linebackers and our front seven. We've been attacking one of the best lines in the country ourselves here at Penn State. I feel like we're ready for a challenge and to attack on Saturday."
The main way they'll counter teams this year? Whether it's run or pass, Penn State's elite team speed will lead the way.
"O-linemen are mainly powerful in their box, in their framework. When you have fast guys, [they] can get on those edges and it makes it hard for those guys [linemen] to come out and get you in the space that there is on the football field. I feel like speed is tremendously important, and it can be disruptive in the run and pass game."
Breaking down zone rushingFor Jacobs, defense comes down to simplifying what he sees and blocking out the noise. Whether it's read options, RPO schemes, or zone running concepts, he's watching his film and then relying on the defense rules to help him play fast. However, he explained what the West Virginia offense tries to do when they play inside and outside zone concepts.
"They want to get you out of our gap. A lot of times, that stuff is masked up by shifts and motions and all that stuff. But really, they want you to not focus on what you're seeing and get distracted by other things.
Finally, Jacobs talked about how the defense has progressed this season. He shared a quote from defensive coordinator Manny Diaz who explained how the team should play as a unit instead of trying to make plays individually.
"We've only gotten better because we play for one another. We make sure that we have each other's back. Coach Manny always says you can't take money out of your teammate's pocket. You've got to know your assignment and execute your assignment so that you can make a play, but sometimes so your teammate can make a play," Jacobs said.
Listen to the full interview for all of Jacobs' comments.

Snyder travels to see Penn State QB Commit Ethan Grunkemeyer
Friday night was a showcase game for Olentangy quarterback Ethan Grunkemeyer, who faced off against Ohio power Medina in the second week of his senior season. While Grunkemeyer had a quiet game from a statistical standpoint, his team raced away in the fourth quarter, winning 53-28. So what did Snyder learn from his trip out to see Grunkemeyer? He'll discuss the game and his conversation with the Penn State commit afterward.
The rest of the staff also caught games online over the weekend. Fitz saw Philly defensive end Mylachi Williams beat the NFL Academy in Ireland to start his season, and host Thomas Frank Carr watched Pittsburgh Central Catholic teammates Peter Gonzalez and Anthony Speca get a big win in their opening game from Friday.

We covered a lot of ground this week when previewing the West Virginia defense for Penn State's season-opening game on Sept. 2. If you haven't yet, check out the preview of the running game and the passing game from earlier.
Today on the BWI Live YouTube show, we're condensing that down into five things you should watch for when Penn State has the football. How will the offseason storylines for West Virginia affect the matchup with Penn State next weekend? We'll discuss how the team tried to rebuild its defense and the potential problems that will cause.
Then we'll discuss the mak up how the Mountaineers will try to attack probable starter Drew Allar and the rest of the offense. From there we'll discuss the best way that Penn State can attack the defensive structure. Join the show today at 10 a.m. Live on YouTube to discuss the matchup and to get your questions and thoughts on air. If you haven't yet, subscribe to Blue White Illutrated's YouTube channel.
Setting the scene for what Penn State will face
Some teams build their roster through recruiting and some dip heavily into the transfer portal to fix problems. While West Virginia likely wants to recruit and develop talent, they've had to bring in waves of transfers over the last two seasons to address immediate needs. We'll review which players they selected to join the program and how those players fit into the scheme. Some even have a Penn State connection.
Next, we'll look at a stylistic difference West Virginia uses, unlike the typical attack that Penn State sees in the Big Ten. The Mountaineers will drop eight and only rush three lineman more than any Big Ten team from last season. How does that affect Allar? And what can we take from last year that gives us a clue about how he can perform in this situation? We'll look at that.
Compounding issues for WVU
Not only did West Virginia bring in a healthy dose of transfers, but defensive coordinator Jordan Lesley said this spring that the team plans to lean on its young linebackers to play in 2023. With some players not arriving until the summer, how sound will the Mountaineers defense be in week one? Youth and unfamiliarity may lead to certain issues for the team.
How could Penn State attack?
Lastly, we'll look at last season's data to understand which players, schemes, and formations caused West Virginia the most trouble. Then, we'll translate that information and examine which Penn State players can cause the most damage. Join the show at 10 a.m. to find out!

Penn State football concluded training camp for the 2023 season this week and shifted its focus and practice schedule to the season opener. Penn State takes on West Virginia in ten days and the Blue White Illustrated YouTube show is here to get you ready with a review of Penn State's practice from Wednesday. Join insiders Nate Bauer and Sean Fitz as they discuss what they saw and heard at the Lasch practice facility this week.
After practice in the regular BWI Live Segment, Between the Lines, the group will also discuss the nuances of James Franklin's press conference. Fitz and Bauer will interpret what the Penn State head coach had to say to reporters in the final press conference before game week.
Join the show at 10 a.m. EST on YouTube to get the industry leaders' latest on Penn State football. If you still need to, subscribe to our channels so you can experience all breaking news and regular season coverage. We'll be offering new ways to follow your favorite team for the 2023 season, like a live tailgate show three hours before the kickoff of each Penn State football game.
Penn State practice observations
Penn State switched to a regular season order for the roster, separating the team into the D-Squad (developmental squad) and the regular roster. The team still has open competitions at several positions, including receiver and quarterback, for which Franklin declined to name starters on Wednesday evening. What observations did BWI glean at practice from the offense and defense? Join the show to find out.
Between the Lines
Whenever Franklin speaks, we listen and report what he says to say. But sometimes, what he says needs interpretation. This week on Between the Lines, Fitz and Bauer will discuss Franklin's comments on the starting quarterback competition, Dante Cepha's progress since joining the team, and the special team's battle for punter and kicker.
Cephas was a major addition to the team in February of 2023 but has had a seemingly slow start to camp. What did Franklin say, and what did he mean when asked if Cephas is where he's like the receiver to be at this point?
Franklin also addressed the special teams and quarterback competitions at camp during his comments on Wednesday. What did our experts glean from his comments and do they believe Franklin when it comes to the quarterback spot?
BWI Mailbag
Finally, the show turns the reigns over to you in the final segment. Do you have a question for the group? Maybe you want to get your opinion heard on air. Join the show live and give your thoughts in the live chat during the show. The best questions or comments will be featured in the BWI Mailbag.

Penn State Lands top runner in 2026
Penn State running backs coach JaJuan Seider was already ahead of the curve on recruiting, with Kiandrea Barker in committed to the Class of 2025. On Saturday, he extended his reach into 2026 when Mickens, a top prospect in the nation for his cycle, committed to the program. Snyder and Fitz will discuss how Penn State landed a player of Micken's talent so early. They'll also discuss the potential pitfalls of a commitment roughly three years before signing day.
They'll also discuss Micken's skills, talent, and potential. The Harrisburg area running back has offers from national programs like Alabama and Tennessee despite only playing one year of varsity football.
Ethan Grunkemeyer lights up Week One
With the high school football schedule starting in parts of the country, several Penn State commits in the Class of 2024 had opening games last Friday. The most notable performance came from four-star quarterback commit Ethan Grunkemeyer.
The Penn State pledge threw for over 400 yards and led the Olentangy Braves to a 46-35 win over Toledo Whitmer. Fitz and Snyder will discuss his performance and preview a showdown with Ohio power Medina coming up this Friday.
Top 2025 defenders
Finally, Fitz and Snyder will discuss the top 2025 defenders to know heading into the regular season for Penn State football. These juniors are the top names to know for the future of the Nittany Lion's defense. The duo will discuss the defensive line prospects that stand out heading into their pivotal upcoming season, where Penn State legacy Anthony Sacca's recruiting journey stands, and which players have the early lead on a LockdownU spot for 2025.

The second half of the show focuses on questions submitted to the show by fans. They tackle a range of topics, including the growth and development of coaches on the Penn State roster, Jaxon Smolik's progress as the team's third quarterback, defensive tackle breakout candidates, and more.
Finally, a Blue White Illustrated Lions Den member wanted to know more about the team's fourth-down success after last week's show. The show's final quarter is dedicated to conversation about the data behind fourth-down decisions, Penn State's success last year, and the disconnect between the information and the execution by coaches.
