  • Being A "Coconut" with Manny Padilla
Listeners this week we're back with Manny Padilla.

Manny wrote his first short story when he was 8-years-old and has been writing ever since. Despite his parents' protests ("You'll starve to death!"), Manny earned a journalism degree, and has since worked consistently in the media and publishing fields with over 36 years of award-winning writing experience, working as a newspaper reporter and editor; marketing, public relations and advertising professional; and public speaker.

Manny "retired" from his position as Vice President of Marketing and Business Development for Los Angeles Police Federal Credit Union in 2019. There, he was responsible for extending the not-for-profit financial institution’s work within the Los Angeles Police and Sheriff’s departments, as well as law enforcement communities.

Prior to that, Manny held roles as First Vice President of Marketing, Metrocities Mortgage; Marketing Communications Manager, The California Endowment; Vice President of Marketing, City National Bank; and Writer/Editor/ Supervisor, Los Angeles Daily News Special Sections.
In 2021, Manny added the title of "author" to his resume, with the creation of his debut novel, "Coconut."

  • The Answer is Always No Until You Ask with Kim Cordova
Listeners, we're back this week with Kim Cordova.

Kim Cordova was elected President of the UFCW Local 7 in 2009 and is currently serving her fourth term. She is the first woman, in its 150-year history, to ever lead Local 7 and serves as Vice President of UFCW International. Cordova believes when there is a strong labor movement, there is a strong middle class – the key to rebuilding the economies of Colorado and Wyoming.

Cordova, a Local 7 union member for 35 years and counting, has dedicated her career to fighting for the health, safety, and wellbeing of working people. In 1985, while still in high school, she began her career as a grocery bagger for Safeway. While working at the store she was held at gunpoint, an experience that sparked her passion for workplace safety. After eight years at Safeway, in several positions including stocker, checker, and baker, she was hired in 1993 as a Local 7 union organizer and later union representative. She served in that position until May 2009 when she returned to work at a Safeway.

Later in 2009 as a rank-and-file member, Cordova ran for President of UFCW Local 7 on a reform platform to implement ethical practices and other financial controls to restore credibility to Colorado’s largest private-sector labor union. Following a stunning upset victory of a longtime incumbent, Cordova assumed office in 2010.

Throughout the COVID-19 pandemic, she has been a vocal advocate calling for enforceable safety measures for her members, America’s essential workers. Under her leadership during the pandemic, the union has called for increased onsite COVID-19 testing, improved workplace safety measures, paid sick leave, and maintaining hazard pay until the danger has subsided for her members—many of whom are considered essential workers.

As one of the few Latinas elected to union leadership in the United States, Cordova is helping pave the way for a new generation of women of color in organized labor. UFCW Local 7 represents more than 25,000 grocery, meatpacking, food processing, health care, cosmetology and barbershop workers in Colorado and Wyoming.

Cordova resides in Denver with her family and two dogs. The family enjoys tennis, riding bikes, and driving in the mountains. She’s often cheering on her home state teams including the Denver Broncos, Denver Nuggets, Colorado Avalanche, and the Colorado Rockies.

  • Your Story Matters
Listeners we are back this week with episode 200!

What a milestone! Instead of a celebration, Pam comes in to share a part of her story that catapulted her passion for listening to other's stories. It only took 200 episodes for her to feel safe enough to share this story, and by synchronicity, episode 200 landed during April, Sexual Assault Awareness Month.

    TRIGGER WARNING: Sexual Assault.

This episode is brought to you by The Washington Office on Latin America
Social leaders often face-off with a Colombian government that refuses to admit its failures, and they stand up to armed groups terrorizing their communities. Hundreds of Afro-descendent and Indigenous social leaders have been killed in Colombia for their work advocating for their communities, yet they persist. In a new documentary podcast series, you will hear why directly from four of them. REBUILDING PEACE IN COLOMBIA, created by the Washington Office on Latin America and in partnership with Peabody-nominated Lantigua Williams & Co as part of the digital advocacy campaign CON LÍDERES HAY PAZ. The four-part, bilingual podcast series follows the stories of social leaders in Colombia who, every day, under threat to their lives, search for truth and work toward reconciliation, fight for justice for victims of the Colombian conflict, and ensure the government lives up to the guarantees it made to ethnic and rural communities in the historic 2016 peace accord. Subscribe now to REBUILDING PEACE IN COLOMBIA wherever you get your podcasts. With social leaders, peace in Colombia is possible. They are asking us to support their work and protect their lives. Sign up for related updates, advocacy actions, and the action group guide at conlidereshaypaz.org.

Please understand this episode was shared to empower others to share their stories as long as they feel safe. It is our role as citizens of the world to create safe spaces for survivors and thrivers. The goal of this episode is to create awareness of sexual assault and provide resources like those listed below:

  • Querer es Poder with Sarah Farzam
Listeners we're back this week with Sarah Farzam.

Sarah is the Founder and CEO of Bilingual Birdies Sarah is half Mexican and half Iranian and grew up speaking Spanish, Farsi, and English. She’s from L.A. and graduated from UCLA with a BA in English. From there Sarah moved to Mexico City and later NYC where she taught high school and waited tables for a year before getting the idea to start her own educational company when she was only 24 years old.

A lover of music, language, and culture, her intention was to create a space to celebrate diversity with children. In 2006, with zero business experience, Sarah launched Bilingual Birdies, a foreign language and live music program for children up to age six in NYC after months of passing out fliers in public playgrounds which yielded a total of three enrolled students (two of which were her twin nieces).

She bootstrapped every step of the way and even invested her own saved-up tip money to start. Soon after she became the recipient of the Lenovo Heart of Business Entrepreneurship Award ($25K prize) as well as the Network for Teaching Entrepreneurship Pitch Competition ($20K prize). After completing Goldman Sach’s 10,000 Small Businesses Program, Sarah began to set the framework to build an online platform that would help her expand nationally.

Today Bilingual Birdies teaches Spanish, French, Mandarin, and English to thousands of children per week across 21 cities in the US, Canada, and Australia through their online training program which certifies and licenses bilingual and educators to launch their own Bilingual Birdies businesses in their own city. Enrolled families benefit from original Bilingual Birdies products such as bilingual ebooks, music albums, and the most adorable bird puppets you have ever seen in your entire life.
Under the leadership of Sarah, Bilingual Birdies educators have traveled to Guanajuato, Mexico to volunteer and perform in the children’s section of La Calaca Festival. They have also journeyed to Paris, France to train early educators on how to implement their methodology to teach English to children in a fun and musical way.

Most recently they traveled to Nairobi, Kenya to volunteer at Little Ray of Hope, an informal preschool in Kawangware, the country’s second-largest slum. Nearly 13 years after Sarah started Bilingual Birdies she is more motivated than ever to identify bilingual educators with an entrepreneurial spirit who are looking to share their language and culture with children, make money doing what they love, and transform their communities to encourage future generations of global thinking, open-minded humans.
