  • Strange Semantics

In this, we have for you a very important community project. Strange Semantics is an in-depth look at the language that we use to describe this incredible field that we find ourselves in. Terms like paranormal, supernatural, otherworldly, supranatural, supernormal, paraweird, and Fortean are examined through the input of 30 of the most fascinating people in the Fortean community. Podcasters, authors, philosophers, and artists from all over the world provide invaluable insight on a criminally overlooked aspect of Fortean studies. So, sit back and enjoy a trip across the spectrum of paranormal research!

Campfire: Tales of the Strange and Unsettling is created for adult audiences only. The content and discussion in this show will necessarily engage with various accounts that include violence, anxiety, fear, and occasional body horror. Much of it will be emotionally and intellectually challenging to engage with. We will flag especially graphic or intense content so as to never put you in an uninformed or unprepared position. We will do our best to make this a space where we can engage bravely, empathetically, and thoughtfully with difficult content every week.

  • Episode 69: The Mothman Phenomenon Part Three - First Contact

This week, we’re focusing solely on the universally agreed upon encounter with the Mothman. On November 15, 1966, quite possibly one of the most important encounters with anomalous phenomena took place when two young couples from Point Pleasant, Roger and Linda Scarberry, and Steve and Mary Mallette, told police they saw a large grey creature whose eyes "glowed red" when the car's headlights picked it up. This encounter would set the tone for a year of terrifying encounters and light a wildfire of controversy all over the country. This is the encounter that drew John Keel to Point Pleasant and made the Mothman a household name.

MARY HYER MADE A DECISION THAT CHANGED THE WORLD!

  • Campfire Classics Collection Vol. 7 - The Tell-Tale Heart

This week we have a seminal piece from one of the most important authors of the 19th century. Edgar Allen Poe initiated the modern detective story. He was the first to truly develop the gothic horror story. He was, quite possibly, the most significant early forerunner of the science fiction form. There is a reason that the vast majority of you, regardless of your general interest in classic literature, know the man. His contributions to humanity at large thrust him from the depths of literary obscurity where so many brilliant minds languished forever; into the shining lights of pop culture and general world history. Today we are going to experience how he accomplished that tricky tricky deed: drama and fear. His stories had a way of striking at the heart of humanity’s shadow. This story is one of the most significant examples.

Indrid Cold would not only come to be what Woody was known for. He would become a fixture in the life of the Derenberger family. Was he truly from another world? Was he one of the infamous Men in Black? Was this an imaginal creation? One thing we do know?

Tonight’s first tale chronicles the experiences of a young couple on a retreat in the frozen wilderness. Exploring the range of perception in instances of high strangeness, this story is a true testament to what it’s like when everything goes wrong.

  • Campfire Classics Collection Vol. 5 - A Ghost Story

In this week’s installment of Campfire Classics Collection, we’ll be snuggling up to the fire with A Ghost Story by acclaimed American writer, humorist, entrepreneur, publisher, and lecturer, Mark Twain. This tale is particularly fascinating because, not only is it good for a scare, it is a damming commentary on the hoax of the Cardiff Giant. For those of you that find yourself unfamiliar with that topic, rest assured. It will be covered at great length in a future episode. For now, make yourself a hot cup of tea, find your favorite blanket, and settle in for an eerie and elegant tale written by a true master.

  • Friday Night Fright

This week’s first tale explores the nature of precognition, death, and the power of interpersonal relationships to transcend its boundaries. Someone Has Died chronicles a night in the life of a woman plagued by an unshakable feeling; the unwavering stone in her stomach that warns of impending doom.

Our second story tells the tale of a promising young phD student that finds himself wrapped up in machinations beyond even his considerable comprehension. A mysterious professor’s choice to include him in an even more mysterious experiment could lead to enlightenment or damnation.

These stories are works of fiction. Any names or characters, businesses or places, events or incidents, are fictitious. Any resemblance to actual persons, living or dead, or actual events is purely coincidental.
