CANCASTpodcast: Diana Danger and Mary Thorn Reel in Record Catches and Shatter Stereotypes in the Fishing World.

In recent years, there has been a significant increase in the number of female anglers who are not only taking up fishing as a hobby but also excelling at it. As a result, more women are reeling in record catches and challenging the notion that fishing is a male-dominated sport.

Several studies suggest that women may actually catch more fish than men. According to a study by the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission, female anglers have consistently caught more fish than their male counterparts in the state's recreational fishing activities. The study found that female anglers tend to use more effective fishing techniques and are more patient when it comes to waiting for a bite.

Another study published in the journal Fisheries Research found that female anglers in Wisconsin caught more fish than men on average, with women landing larger fish and keeping them alive longer after release. The study suggests that this could be because women are more attentive and patient when handling fish.

The rise of female anglers in the sport can be attributed to various factors, including increased access to education and resources, changes in cultural norms, and the rise of social media, which has allowed women to connect and share their experiences with other anglers.

Overall, the increasing number of women taking up fishing and excelling at it is a positive sign for the sport. It highlights the importance of diversity and inclusivity in outdoor activities and breaks down gender stereotypes associated with fishing.

CANCASTpodcast: The Perfect Jig for fishing in Ontario and beyond.

The CANCAST crew is joined by Brendan Knaggs, owner of The Perfect Jig, and Warren McRae, Graywood Sporting Group. Spoiler Alert - a couple of Ontario's best fishing secrets get spilled in this episode. Sorry, Warren!

What is a jig used for in fishing?

Jigs are intended to create a jerky, vertical "jumping" motion to attract fish, as opposed to other typical lures like swimbaits, spoons and spinnerbaits, which move through the water more or less horizontally. The jig is versatile and can be used in salt and fresh water.

Jigs can be tipped with live bait or teamed with plastics to catch pretty much any fish that swims. Looking at the jig head, you can make the statement that it is one of the most versatile delivery systems known to anglers.

What are the best jigs to catch fish in Ontario fisheries and beyond? You'll have to watch the episode and find out precisely what fishing secrets the guys let slip.

Listen for early announcements about fishing bait, equipment and gear coming to the CANCAST Fishing & Tackle Show at the Peterborough Memorial Centre on April 2, 2023.
