Cannes I Kick It

You've all been begging for it, and so finally here it is The Second Manktacular. Two years ago, the Twelve Guests of Mankmas helped us to explore every nook and cranny of David Fincher's brand new film Mank. But now, in 2022, Mank has acquired enough age as to be transformed. What will we find? Will Mank's rind have gotten funky? Will it have the good type of mold or the bad type of mold? How many guests will be on the Second Manktacular? (zero) Should Zach Galifianakis have played Mank? Does the cheese metaphor make it into the episode? Who will be the jury president for the competition of the 2023 Berlinale? All there is, is Mank. Have a happy holiday.

Cullen, Emilio, and Jesse, joined this time by Andy, once again come together to plan out a theoretical film festival for the end of the year. Where will we host it? How many days will it take place? Who will be the guest for our live episode record? The sky's the limit when you don't have to follow through on any of your plans!

We've got our first festival lineup for 2023! Next year's Sundance lineup gives us high profile premieres, a look at the avant-garde, and our most exciting cast rundown yet! Then, our last donor's choice of the year brings us My Winnipeg! I don't remember what we talk about in that one and forgot to ask Andy to write a description -- too late now! Great movie though!

Andrew Bujalski has a new movie out. Were you aware? Having premiered quietly at Tribeca and then coming out even move quietly on VOD, THERE THERE is ambitious both structurally and in its production, and we are here to talk about it since it seems no one else will! We pair it with it's structural sibling, Max Ophüls' LA RONDE. Jesse talks Improv! Andy talks about acting duets! It's a goofy delight!

Tradition keeps us centered. We need things to return to year after year, cycle after cycle. It is our light in the darkness. But sometimes, the light in the darkness is a little too bright. Hence, it is our second annual SHADESGIVING/SHORTSGIVING episode! Once again we all brought a short to the table: James Benning and Bette Gordon's THE UNITED STATE OF AMERICA, Nick Park's WALLACE & GROMIT IN THE WRONG TROUSERS, Niki Lindroth von Bahr's THE BURDEN, and Peter Tscherkassky's TRAIN AGAIN. From the charming and hilarious to the experimental and existential, we are thankful for the opportunity to share this with our listeners!

In the past, when reading a book has been suggested as something the hosts of the show could do to provide fodder for an episode's destruction, there was yelling and gnashing of teeth. But now, with James Gray's Cannes premiere finally having its theatrical run and making its way to the VOD market, we are finally to break through the long resistance to the written word, and pair it some required reading. That's right, we're pairing ARMAGEDDON TIME with some short stories from George Saunders' LIBERATION DAY, "The Mom of Bold Action," "Love Letter," and "Ghoul." We talk parallels, point of view, big performances, and more!

It's been months since we checked the papers and read the news, so we spend a lot of time catching up on what's been happening. Distributors are distributing! Michael Chernus is maybe getting work? Films are eyeing winter debuts! All this plus some more Currents odds and ends!

We may not have made it to the New York Film Festival, but we still saw a number of the films from the Currents section, so Jesse and Emilio are joined by Jordan Cronk to talk about some of them including new features from Heinz Emigholz and Jonás Trueba and shorts from Nico Pereda and Ben Russell. Then we talk to Jordan about the screening series he runs in Los Angeles, Acropolis Cinema. And in Special Presentations: two books and an ominous update from Emilio.

Follow Jordan on twitter @JordanCronk and if you're in LA check out a screening at Acropolis Cinema

What's scarier than staying up past your bedtime for no good reason? Perhaps only a serial killer! The gang braves the elements to record at midnight eastern and take a look at Midnight Madness for The Final Spooktacular and the films of Dario Argento, classic and contemporary. From 1987's OPERA to 2022's DARK GLASSES, we get into his eye for gore, the gore of eyes, and all things slasher. Listen, IF YOU SCARE!!!
