Cannes I Kick It

Ever feel like somebody’s watching you? We return to Cannes 2006 to visit Andrea Arnold’s debut feature, the CCTV featuring RED ROAD, and the wonderfully named Florian Henckle von Donnersmarck’s debut, the divided Germany spy drama THE LIVES OF OTHERS. We are joined by the great C. HOWSON-JAN to get into the timing of character reveals, the look of listening in isolation, and the laughs of it all.

Its time for the Spooktacular! Spooky Month once again comes to an end with a look at the festival run of JAMES WAN. We’re joined by CHRIS MELLO to give a look at franchise starters SAW, INSIDIOUS, and THE CONJURING. We get into Wan’s history with Leigh Whannell, what his relationship to other strains of horror filmmaking is, and a few of us even argue about MALIGNANT.

It's hard to believe that Berlin is right around the corner, but we kick off this week by looking at the Euro fest's announced Jury President, M. Night Shyamalan, and what movies might be in the mix to compete for the Golden Bear. Then it's a visit to a local fest: Cullen has seen several virtual screenings at the Chicago Film Festival and he details the lows and highs. Finally, we ponder Todd Haynes and his new music documentary THE VELVET UNDERGROUND, getting into the sights, the sounds, and the writing credits of the former Palme D'Ollie winner's first foray into the world of documentaries.

Spooky month will not be stopped, we're checking out the freaky world of Kiyoshi Kurosawa. Variety's J. KIM MURPHY joins us to look at three (roughly) consecutive offerings from the turn of the century: CHARISMA, SEANCE, and PULSE. We get into his formalism, his humor, and of course, his spooks and scares.

Spooky Month! We’re kicking it off with a shriek! By visiting the weird world of Peter Strickland and his fascinating aesthetic. We are joined by Congratulations CEO, Blank Check Producer, and Slow Christmas Curator BEN HOSLEY. Together we look at the audio stylings of BERBERIAN SOUND STUDIO, have a frank discussion about fetishes in THE DUKE OF BURGUNDY, and talk about the deadly fashion of IN FABRIC.

New York baby! The greatest in the world! And CIKI, as this episode is released, is descending upon it to take in the NEW YORK FILM FESTIVAL in all its glory! As such, we thought it appropriate to preview our festival runs with friend of the show and fellow NYFF attendee SAM HERBST! Hear what movies we’re seeing on what day! Hear how we are getting into New York City! Hear us worry about a 4DX screening of VENOM: LET THERE BE CARNAGE which has since somewhat resolved. Also, Cullen has a list!
