Captivate Podcast

“It is more blessed to give than to receive.” This is one of the verses that most people know, both inside and even outside the church. We can freely quote it to others, and we think it is generally true. In our hearts we can often hear another voice saying, “I’m not so sure, I think another pair of Vuori shorts might make me feel pretty blessed.” But this promise means it’s from the mouth of Jesus, and we have to trust that Jesus always wants what is best for us. His desire truly is to bring blessings into our lives in all ways, and generosity is one of the ways that blessings flow into our lives.

In week three of our series “In Cash we Trust” we looked at our relationship to money and what God really wants for us in a message called, “Sowing and Reaping”.

This series is about money. But really it's about trust. In fact, the money God gives us to steward in this life shows him if we truly trust him and if he can truly trust us. The Bible is very clear in Luke 16:10 that God already knows if he can trust us with more based on how faithful or trustworthy we are with what we have right now. The reality is, we often want more before giving more or practicing sacrificial generosity. But God is not concerned with how we steward what we don't have but rather what's already in our hand. What we choose to do with the money we currently have is a test, a trust test.

In fact, there's only one time in all of the Bible that God says, "Test me... I dare you." And that test is with money, more specifically, the tithe. What is the tithe? And what is it not? This Sunday we jumped into one of the most widely debated principles, practices, and teachings in the Bible in a message called, "The Tithe Test."

Jesus talks about money more than anything else in the Gospels. 11 of his 39 parables are about finances as he talks about it more than heaven and hell combined. But why is that? Is it because Jesus cares so much about money? No. It's because he knows we care so much about money. Jesus wants to free us from the grip of money so we can have it without it having us.

The truth is, money is not the root of all evil, but the love of it is (1 Timothy 6:10). This verse seems to depict money as being an innocent object. But if that's the case then why does Jesus warn us against riches and the pursuit of more so much? He warns us because money is often not an innocent object as much as it is a rival god that is fighting for the trust in our hearts. Money will promise many things like security, significance, identity and freedom. But friends only Jesus Christ can give us those things! It's time to be freed from the grip finances has on so many of our lives. Tune into this week’s message called, “Money Talks”.

Some of us can admit today that the only reason we are in church or still in church is because we have encountered God. Although miracles, signs, wonders, and emotions cannot anchor our faith, our God is an experiential God. He is not merely a subject we learn about, but a God we encounter. When we read scripture, it is encounter after encounter of desperate and thirsty people who longed for a touch from the divine.

Jesus would often find thirsty people in the midst of the crowd. Jesus would often walk through a crowd, much like we have on Sundays, looking for the one who was ready, hungry, and reaching out for an encounter with Him. This Sunday we made space to do just that. This weekend was not just about hearing a message but about us experiencing the message. Tune into this week’s message called, “Thirsty for an Encounter.”

When we think of the Holy Spirit, there's a lot of images that come to mind. Maybe you think of the gentle whisper in 1 Kings 19 or the dove descending upon Jesus in Matthew 3. But no doubt one of the most powerful and enduring images of the Holy Spirit is that of him coming upon the disciples as a rushing wind and tongues of fire on the day of Pentecost.

This moment catalyzed some of the most powerful and revolutionary ministry the world has ever seen. All throughout Acts you see the wonder that was the early church. But often what happens when we read about their extraordinary faith and the miracles they witnessed is that we're actually left feeling a little inadequate.

We unpacked this in a message called, “Imposter Syndrome.”
