Captivate Podcast

When we wake up each morning there is perhaps the greatest invitation from Jesus on this side of eternity that is offered to us. John 15:4, Jesus says, "If you abide in me, I'll abide in you." Jesus is saying, "If want to meet with me, know I want to meet with you. I'm available." But how do we actually ABIDE? What does that look like practically? This Sunday we unpacked a simple way we can abide with Jesus each morning to get filled with his Spirit to face the day. We would have better days if they were lived abiding with The Spirit.

"Holy Spirit Come" is not just of a phrase or sermon title, it's a prayer, a cry of the heart. But sometimes we don't pray this prayer because of three reasons we will unpack on Sunday: We're distracted. We're used to relying on our own power. We don't understand who the Holy Spirit is.

The Holy Spirit is depicted in scripture in many different ways, as a dove, a rushing wind, a fire, oil, a cloud, etc. But the Holy Spirit is none of these things. The Holy Spirit is not a "what" but a "who." This is a crucial place to begin so we can start to develop a relationship with the third member of the trinity, the most important person on the earth today, the one who desires deep friendship with us, The Holy Spirit. We kicked off this series this weekend with a message called, “From Ghost to Friend.”

This Sunday is a highlight day. It's not hard to have faith on highlight days. But if we told you every day leading up to now has felt like a highlight day, we would be lying to you. Often in life we have more hardship days than highlight days. We long to see highlight moments with God, but God often makes us wait for them. Waiting on God is not always fun, but anyone in the Bible who followed God also had to learn how to wait on God. It's not just about the wins for God. See we remember how we won. But God remembers how we waited. It's in the "wait" where our faith, our testimony, and our character is forged. This weekend we unpacked how we can wait on God well in a message called, "Waiting is Winning."

This week we closeed out our series, This Is The Way, by looking at John 21, which in many ways leads us back to the beginning. John 21 deals with the restoration of Peter. Peter's denial of Jesus has caused a rift to form in their relationship, and this story helps us to find the answer to the ever-important question: how does God handle our failures?

Part of what we learn in the story is that there is no failure that the love of God can't overcome, and there is no brokenness that Jesus can't restore. We unpacked this further in a message called, "Back To Where We Started".

God loves faith, He promises to move mountains when He sees even a “Mustard seed” of faith in a person. The Bible tells the story of God doing everything He can to move us to a place of faith and trust. There is a whole chapter in Hebrews 11 that highlights the great exploits of faith taken by the main characters in the Bible. And yet, when we look at the lives of men like Abraham (“Father or faith”) Moses, Elijah, Sarah, David… we also see moments of great doubt, indecision and unbelief. In fact, there is not a person of faith that does not know what it means to doubt. To question the existence of God, His power, or His goodness.

Moments of doubt can be threatening and disillusioning, and sadly man christians for reasons of fear and pride, will not acknowledge the possibility, or worse treat the questioner with derision. But that is never how God deals with honest doubters. He remembers our frames, and that we are but dust. He meets us in mercy, challenging our doubts, and moving us to faith. This week we took a look at the most famous doubter in history, Thomas, and see how Jesus dealt with his doubts and how he deals with ours.

In John 19, Jesus is on the way to the cross. On the way, Jesus has a very interesting and very relatable interchange with a guy named Pontius Pilate. Pilate asks Jesus, "What is truth?" This is a question that our world is wrestling with today perhaps more than ever. Sometimes it is very hard for us to delineate between our desires, our perspectives, our preferences, and THE truth. The reality is, truth is not an ever changing thing based on our life's experiences. Truth is absolute and constant for everyone, everywhere, at all times. Truth is also not just something we believe, it is someone we follow. Jesus is the truth and this weekend we unpacked what happens when our truth collides with his in a message called, “You’re Not The Pilot.”
