In John 18, after 5 chapters in the upper room with his disciples, Jesus is now headed toward the Garden of Gethsemane, where the final path to the cross begins. As Jesus gets arrested in the garden, Jesus announces, "I AM HE." When he says this, the army that came to arrest him falls down, as Jesus is truly announcing, "I AM GOD."

Jesus was making it very clear who was in control in this moment. No one was making Jesus go to the cross, he went there willingly for us. He was and is always in control. This is so powerful for us to know as we live in the middle of chaos in our world every day. That even when it may seem like darkness and chaos are winning, we get to follow the one who's not worried about a thing. Jesus is the guy, who's always in control. This Sunday we unpacked what this in a messaged called, “I’m Him.”

Have you ever spent time around people who only have moments, days, or weeks to live? Because of what I do for a living, I have. It's always a gift to me. It's fascinating to me what people choose to talk about and not talk about in these moments. People rarely talk about their net worth, their career, or their yacht. Rather they talk about the people they love, their regrets, whether or not they were generous, and if they truly feel like they answered the call of God on their life. It's amazing that in the last moments what truly matters rises to the surface.

John 17 pulls back the curtains and gifts us a look into this moment for Jesus. John 17 contains the longest continuous prayer from Jesus in all of the Bible. As he prepares his heart for the cross of Calvary that was upon him, he reveals what is heaviest and biggest on his heart for us. Check out this week’s message called, "BIG on His Heart."

As humans we love beginnings, they’re exciting, filled with dreams and possibilities; marriages, new houses, jobs… And we love good endings- a finished product, graduation, retirement…  they’re a sign of completion, arrival at out desired destination. But if we had the opportunity most of us would elect to skip the middle part. That messy, muddy middle part of our stories that aren’t perfectly curated, aesthetically pleasing, certainly not planned (at least by us!) The middle parts are sometimes filled with heartache, confusion, and seeing setbacks.

For the disciples, they were in the muddy middle of their lives- they loved the start with Jesus, and had eyes on the final destination, but it was there in the middle that they and we learn some of the most important lessons on faith, trust, and obedience.

We've spent the last few months making our way through the book of John in our series, This Is The Way. We've examined the life and the way of Jesus, and soon we'll be looking at his death and resurrection.

But sandwiched between those things is the account of the last night that Jesus spends with his disciples, in John 13-17. This is no doubt an extremely anxious time for everyone involved as Jesus is mere hours from the cross, and the disciples fear losing their way, their sense of belonging and identity, and their security.

And that's a need and fear that we all experience. One of the things that connects us all as human beings is the need for home--a place of safety and security, where we are known and loved and at peace. In John 14, Jesus comforts his disciples by reminding them that the place, the home, that he's set aside for them isn't of an earthly nature, but a heavenly one. "Don't be troubled," Jesus says. "There are more than enough rooms in my Father's house."

This Sunday we continued our series “This Is The Way” and dove head first into John 13. After a long day in the hot middle eastern sun, 12 sweaty men, walking in their sandals down the dusty roads of Jerusalem were greeted by their rabbi for dinner. The teacher proceeded to put on a towel, get on his hands and knees and wash their filthy feet. This rabbi was the King of the universe, God in the flesh and the one who chose to humble himself and wash feet. He then looked at the men with him, as he looks at us through the barrel of antiquity and said, “Do for others as I have done for you.” Take up your towel.

But before Jesus took up the towel, he had to take off his outer garments. Before he put on flesh and came to us in the earth, He had to step down from Glory. Before we can serve like Him, we must also like him set aside what hinders us from taking up our towels. Check out this week’s message titled, “Take Up Your Towel”!
