We continued our series “W8 ON THE LORD,” as this Sunday was Communities Takeover Sunday!

Last week we talked about the spiritual practice of waiting on God, but waiting can be really hard when we’re doing it alone.

Statistically, we as Americans are not the best at doing this thing called “friendship.” In fact the word “friend” is a very loosely used term that could either describe someone you’ve known your whole life or someone you literally met today. Although we are more connected online than we’ve ever been, stats show that people in our culture are more lonely than they’ve ever been… Insert Jesus. 

One of Jesus’ greatest miracles in the Gospels, that does not get talked about enough, is that while being a guy in his 30’s… Jesus had 12 good friends… Well… 11 to be more accurate. Jesus had deep and long lasting friendships that endured the craziest levels of hardship and persecution. When Jesus went through hell his friends waited for him, prayed for him, and stood by his side. 

We all need friends like that. We need people in our corner who remind us that we don’t have to rush through life, prove ourselves, or have everything figured out. We need people who will stick with us when things are good, but especially when they aren’t. We all need people who don’t just want something from us but want something for us. That’s the kind of friendship Jesus modeled. 

This week, as we celebrated community together, we asked some pretty important questions: Who are the people helping you follow Jesus? Who are you pursuing? And are you the kind of friend who remains when life gets hard?

We unpacked it all with you in John 15, in a message where we coined a new word for friends…  “W8ers: Friends Who Wait With You.”

This Sunday we celebrated 8 years of Captivate Church and stepped into a brand new series called, “W8 ON THE LORD” with a message about what it looks like to trust God in the waiting. If we're honest, waiting is hard. We live in a world that tells us everything should happen faster… getting answers, reaching success, experiencing breakthroughs. Our world does not value waiting… but God does. When we’re waiting God is watching. He wants to know if he can trust us with what he is waiting to give us. And we’re not alone in the waiting, every biblical character that followed the Lord had to wait for breakthroughs and highlights. 

This week we took a look at the life of David, perhaps the most talked about and celebrated character in the Bible outside of Jesus. David’s highlights are well documented and talked about and yet only make up about 2% of his story. David had to wait a lot, and specifically for this week, he had to wait in caves while hiding from his enemies. And yet it’s in the cave of waiting where God forms him into the King of Israel that was after God’s heart. Before he was the King of Israel, he learned to be the King of the Cave and praise the Lord all the way through it.

And as we celebrate eight years of Captivate, there is no better reminder for where we're going next: we don't want to rush ahead of God. We want to wait on the Lord and let Him lead us into everything He has for our future.

This week we concluded our series, “Carry-On Only” all about letting go of the luggage that weighs down our souls.

As we’ve been talking about throughout this series, new seasons often require new ways of doing things. And while a different approach often means picking up something new, it can also mean letting something old go.

And this week we considered an interesting question: What do we do with things we just can’t seem to let go?

Because the truth is that a lot of us carry things with us that don’t necessarily have a clean fix. And there’s something really freeing about what Jesus shows us to do with them.

We looked at the story of Hannah in 1 Samuel 1 and talked about what it actually looks like to trust God with the things we can’t fix, change, or fully understand.

And maybe most importantly: what if healing doesn’t require resolution?

This Sunday we continued our series “Carry-On Only,” and this week’s message is one that likely hit close to home for all of us.

Life is a journey, and whenever we go on a journey we pack luggage. We take things with us that we think we’ll need. But as we’ve been talking about in this series, not everything we pick up along the way was ever meant to come with us.

This week we looked at something that can be good in itself, but can quickly become baggage when we let it take the wrong place in our lives: our goals.

We all have dreams, ambitions, plans, and things we want to accomplish. There’s nothing wrong with having goals. But what happens when the thing we’re pursuing begins to become more important than who God is calling us to become?

That’s the question we wrestled with together in this sermon. We unpacked what it looks like to pursue what God has placed in front of us without allowing our goals to become the thing that leads us.
