I am excited to welcome Dominican-born Rianna Patterson. Rianna is a multi-award winning TEDx speaker and the Founder of the Dominica Dementia Foundation. In this episode we learn about dementia, Rianna’s journey, and about the island of Dominica. 

Rianna founded Dominica Dementia Foundation at age 18 in memory of her grandfather who passed away from dementia. This organization is a youth-led dementia charity that raises awareness of dementia, provides emotional support to the families and caretakers, as well as facilitates research towards dementia.

Danielle Brown, PhD, is a Brooklyn-native with Trinidad & Tobago roots. In this episode we go deep into all things music, history and culture. She discusses the importance of telling our own stories. 

She is trained in ethnomusicology which is the study of music in culture, and the study of music as culture. She also runs her business, My People Tell Stories, which is based on the idea that people of color should always be telling and interpreting their own stories.

In this episode we both share our passion for music and how our early experiences shaped this love. As women, we discuss the lack of representation in the music industry and I talk about how this hindered me from pursuing a career in music.

Danielle’s book is called East of Flatbush, North of Love: An Ethnography of Home. In it she talks about her experiences growing up in a Caribbean enclave, and how music was used to teach her about her history and culture. She also touches on different topics and aspects of history, like colonialism, imperialism, racism and sexism in the book.

This week’s episode is an information-packed one with Renee Kendall. Renee is an attorney with Trinidadian roots, and she provides practical advice on how to get our affairs in order through wills, advanced directives and similar legal support.

First, Renee tells us what it was like to spend her formative years in Trinidad, then move to America. She talks about having to navigate the nuances of living in America, while being taught Trinidadian values. She also shares her experiences with bullying as a young girl and how she learned to mask her heritage. 

Renee now runs a legal practice named Caribbean Legal Solutions, that focuses primarily on land, estate and advocacy matters. The goal is to connect Caribbean-Americans, and anyone else outside of the Caribbean, with attorneys that are based in the Caribbean. Because people so often retain connections to their home countries such as land ownership or family relationships, they often need to find reliable, trustworthy attorneys.
