Last week I went through some of the benefits of doing webinars to grow your business and clientele and I promised I’ll give you kind of a cheat sheet of what to do with the content afterwards.

So here we go… 21 ways to repurpose the webinar content

Remember when I talked about scripting a webinar? If you’re anything like me, that script may be very detailed so you can actually skip this part. But if you’re using just quick notes which most people likely do… I have to say, I would probably do it, too, but in fact when I’m presenting in my second language, I like to be thoroughly prepared. That’s why I usually have a script which I’m rehearsing so that it doesn’t sound like reading a script, but I don’t need to feel insecure about suddenly kind of missing a word or something, but that’s me.

Anyway, I was saying that if you just use notes, you may want to get a transcript of your webinar done. That’s step one.

The thingy is, while Internet provides with a lot of visual content, it’s still organized according to written words. It’s because that’s how the search engines operate. At least for now.

That’s why you want to have your content in written form as well so you can use that in many ways.

This list will not be in any way complete, but it gets you started.

You can take that text and reprint it on your blog(1), newsletter (2), books (3), reports (4), article directories (5) and slideshare (6). Especially if you’re doing a Q&A, you may have a full series of posts or email course (7) right there.

You can extract single sentences and use them as tweets (8), status updates (9) and quote posters (10) on social media. And don’t forget to repurpose the opt-in copy, emails and other promo content. Bullet points (11), titles (12) and email subject lines (13) may also easily transpose to social media updates as well as infographics (14).

You can extract the audio. You may want to take a piece of it and for instance use it as a sponsor announcement (15) on your or someone else’s (16) podcast.

You can recycle the video as teasers (17), to promote your next webinar (18), course lessons (19), lead magnets (20) and bonus items (21) of your own course or give it to a partner.

Webinars are a way of the world these days. Today I’m going to go through the benefits of them, and next week I’ll explain how to thoroughly repurpose the content.

But let’s begin; Why should you at least consider doing webinars?

First of all, they are convenient and cost-effective. You don’t need to go anywhere, not to mention your audience doesn’t have to, either. No expensive traveling, no excess time investments from either party. Heck, you don’t even need to get dressed if you don’t want to, although I would suggest you do, as it probably makes you feel more professional.

When it comes to cost-efficiency: the only mandatory costs are related to having a computer and Internet connection. You can invest on equipment and software, but you don’t have to. As a small business owner you’re already collecting email addresses, so you’re using an autoresponder service, don’t you. Well, that’s pretty much all you need for communication and Google Hangouts distributes your broadcast worldwide for absolutely free.

No restrictions on how may viewers fit in, or how long will your replays be available.

And there was another benefit, too: your message can reach masses. Instead of spending your time teaching folks one by one, you can leverage your time while you’re helping more people.

Whether it’s educating, entertaining or selling – or preferably little bit of all – sharing great and valuable content showcases your expertise, builds your credibility and authority and helps you to turn even the skeptics and procrastinators into clients and success stories.

So webinars can be monetized. They can also be automated and somewhat duplicated, too, at least from most parts.

Now don’t get me wrong, it does take preparations each time you’re broadcasting about a new topic, but lots of coaches out there really only prepare one or two webinars a year and just present it to new audiences. If you’re listening carefully, you will notice there’s the very same structure, almost like a script they’re following and there’s nothing wrong with that. In fact that’s what’s helping even those folks who are not the most comfortable as presenters to keep their thing together.

When you’re doing webinars, you don’t even have to show your face if you don’t want to. You can just share your screen or slides and keep your very detailed notes at hand without feeling awkward. That’s something live stages don’t provide.

”Get Comfortable With Discomfort - Make a Video”

Maybe this media is a little odd to talk about videos, but I’ll do it anyway. I’m going to share some tips on how to get started making them if you’re not comfortable with camera at all.

So right now we’re not going to discuss screen shares, but the kind of videos that put you in front of the camera.

I have to say, often times for me it’s a lot about laziness, too, not to put this same material on video as I would have to do something with my hair, put on some makeup etc. But the truth is, what’s more important is the content, not your outlook… would you agree?

Anyway: I found out that my readers as consumers like video, which wasn’t much of a surprise – find out WHY on the article I wrote…

however not everyone is quite as comfortable making one of their own.

Sometimes it is the absolute best form of content, especially if you need to show how to use something or perform something. One of the things almost impossible to explain in written only would be sport technique.

I actually started making videos by shooting my warmup and kettlebell exercises. In the oldest ones I first show a technique, then write it out and then show again, but I don’t talk. Later I’ve made dozens of videos just to explain some detail to folks that are struggling with it.

I gradually learned to tolerate my own flaws on video as I’ve watched them over and over again. My own biggest challenge has always been that I tend to talk a lot, instead of making it concise and to the point. Having a script helps with that.

Here’s how anyone can get started:

Step #1: Audit

Start by picking a topic you love, something you could talk for hours about.

It doesn’t matter if it’s not the topic you teach, because the purpose of this exercise is not to produce fantastic footage for YouTube, but to teach you to be comfortable with the camera.

So press “Record”, smile and start talking. Forget about the camera, just explain your thing as if you were talking to your closest friend. She knows you and the topic is something you know inside and out, so there’s nothing to be nervous about.

Then press stop and take a look at what you have.

Step #2: Analyze

You probably feel like your voice doesn’t sound like you at all and you may have annoying maneuvers. Perhaps you’re holding your head in a position which is accentuating your nose you don’t like (try adjusting the camera!), wave your hands or you keep repeating a word : “like”, “you know” or “actually” which after a while starts to irritate even yourself.

Don’t criticize: After all, this is your first time. Instead focus on technicalities and try to stay analytic. You don’t need to show this to anyone.

Step #3: Rehearse

Shoot another round, but this time try to keep that maneuver to a minimum. You’re still talking about your favorite topic to your best pal, so you don’t need to focus on memorizing that any more than you would need to focus on breathing.

Repeat this exercise enough times until you’ve gotten used to your own voice and have fixed the most annoying distractions.

Step #4: Ramp up

When you’ve made friends with the camera, you can move to the topics you teach. Again, I suggest you start from the ones you know best, and this time you may want to work a script first.

You can (and you should) still pretend you’re talking to the friend – that’s what Sir Richard Branson does, too!

And you can also use notes if you need, that’s quite ok. Or shoot multiple takes and edit afterwards if needed.

Practice makes perfect – though you may want to remember no such thing exists.

Besides, most people don’t really notice the “flaws” you do.

Just think about that friend of yours who always starts by pointing them out, for instance she walks you through the house and shows every detail that’s somehow off, but you would never notice those if she didn’t tell you that “This wallpaper is slightly too dark, here’s a one millimeter gap and those curtains should be mushroom and not beige…” Ring a bell?

So that’s my tips for you today: Audit, analyze, rehearse and ramp up.

It’s time to continue from where we left off 2 weeks ago. We were talking about research and asking specific questions.

Once you’ve collected the information you need and have determined there in fact is a market for what you had in mind: You know who’s already there, how they do business and an idea of how to position yourself, then you move on to study the people you’re destined to help and their exact problems.

You want to know as much as possible about them and the good news is, that social media has made it easier and more affordable than ever to access that information. Back in the day it was through expensive surveys that you were able to do what you can now do on Facebook, Blogs, Forums and Amazon.

Again, ask specific questions while doing this research, that’s going to help you focus, as social media platforms have the tendency of just sucking you in and get you distracted. You know that red dot on your Facebook profile header that says you have 46 new updates to see… Keep away from that!

If you cannot do that, find an assistant who does it for you. Just remember to arm her with very specific instructions. Otherwise you won’t be able to get anything out of the findings.

What you’re doing there is really just painting a picture of one person that might represent a group of your ideal clients.

Focus on how they talk about symptoms – and by the way if you need clarification to what those are, listen to the episode #3 – that stall them, detach them, make them feel guilty, frustrated, angry, overwhelmed, sad, disappointed, afraid, ashamed, lonely, powerless, tired…

Negative feelings, those are the cues you’re looking for.

At this point just pick up all of them if they make you say “I could help with that”, whether they’re on the list of solutions you originally had in mind or not. You can use a simple “playoffs system” to choose the ones to proceed with first. I’ll put an example on the shownotes for you,

Anyway, Store all these comments and conversations with the source so you can later go back to them.

Another important thing you want to find here is what solutions have they already tried while solving their problem. They usually also tell you why it didn’t work for them. That information is golden.

So a quick recap: Choose your questions, pick up a roadmap and dive in.

Probably the most common mistake entrepreneurs make is to think about social media as a time suck or unavoidable evil. Yet, it’s actually a modern day TV channel, newspaper and magazine that every business owns (Jay Baer). Negative mindset and attitude has never kept those floating!

One of the most important ”hats” you’re wearing as an online business owner is the researcher hat. If that’s your second nature, if it’s something you’ve been doing all the time since high school, it really shouldn’t be a problem.

If you’re a writer or a journalist you’re probably very used to doing it. It may be something that you just love because you’re a really curious person, or you don’t like it much but it’s just a part of what you do – kinda like the jogging I mentioned in one of the episodes – unpleasant but necessary – a B task on your list.

But if you’re a multi-passionate person, not so tech savvy and you never really had to do research, you know - write well-researched essays – it may feel more like the root canal.

As a solo entrepreneur you’re wearing all these hats, and without a smart strategy you’re in fact doomed to fail.

First you need to look within: What are your strengths and weaknesses? What do you enjoy doing that’s worth getting paid? Who does resonate best with you and why? But not all questions are quite as easy as those, for instance can you answer this: Why will your business be successful?
