  • Ecumenism isn't Watered Down Christianity, with Nathan Smith

Guest: Nathan Smith, Director of Ecumenism for Glenmary Home Missioners and the Field Representative for USCCB on Ecumenism

Podcast: Glenmary Unity: “Interviews and discussions from Christian ministers and theologians on ecumenical efforts between Catholics and Evangelical and Pentecostal groups.” https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/glenmary-unity/id1561579846

*How Luke introduced us via email: *

“Nathan, meet Gomer. Gomer, meeting Nathan. Nathan is now a Catholic that works for Glenmary doing ecumenical work. He was a Protestant pastor, loves Benedict and Balthasar and dresses very well.

Nathan, one time Gomer and I spent 8 hours in rural Mingo Junction eating $0.25 wings and drinking $5 pitchers until it closed. It was awesome. Gomer, Nathan has to endure standing next to during the US - Mexico game after I'd been drinking since 2:30 pm. I lead an awesome life.

    -Luke”

    *Topics range from: *

    1. Seeker-sensitive church movements and creating a Sunday service for the unchurched and not for the churches. The pros and cons of this movement within protestant Christianity and now how it's being adopted whole cloth into Catholicism
    2. The process of how Nathan became Catholic
    3. Deconstruction within evangelicalism and is that coming to Catholicism? Is it the same thing? What are the differences you see?
    4. You had the unfortunate experience of being next to Luke in the US men's national team soccer game against Mexico where they won 2-0. How much therapy are you receiving via Betterhelp.com/foxes?
    5. Ecumenism doesn't have to be watered down or fake. Ecumenism can actually mutually enrich both sides if both sides keep truth as the central aim.

    16. — This thoroughgoing study examines the doctrine of transubstantiation from historical, theological, and ecumenical vantage points. Brett Salkeld explores eucharistic presence in the theologies of Aquinas, Luther, and Calvin, showing that Christians might have more in common on this topic than they have typically been led to believe. As Salkeld corrects false understandings of the theology of transubstantiation, he shows that Luther and Calvin were much closer to the medieval Catholic tradition than is often acknowledged. The book includes a foreword by Michael Root.
    17. Why "Subsists In" Instead of "Is?" | Catholic Answers
    18. — With the expression subsistit in, the Second Vatican Council sought to harmonize two doctrinal statements: on the one hand, that the Church of Christ, despite the divisions which exist among Christians, continues to exist fully only in the Catholic Church, and on the other hand, that “outside of her structure, many elements can be found of sanctification and truth,” that is, in those churches and ecclesial communities which are not yet in full communion with the Catholic Church. But with respect to these, it needs to be stated that “they derive their efficacy from the very fullness of grace and truth entrusted to the Catholic Church” (DI 16, emphasis added; footnotes omitted; see DI 17).

    25. Wait... You thought I was going to propose?

Interesting Nonprofit updates at Luke's Notre Dame ongoing studies. We talk about a fascinating thing: contract failure and market failure.

Gomer rethought his Libertarism due to the realization that corporations have more money than many governments. Anarcho-capitalism sounds nice (if you have money).

Thanksgiving plans for the boys. Luke goes to the Cabin in the Woods. Gomer invites The Woodlands.

Epic failures in Proposals for both Luke and Gomer. Shannon likes to tell this story.

And we close with comments on Fr. James Jackson's arrest for child porn. This was Gomer's confirmation sponsor. Gomer knew him really well when he was in high school but hasn't maintained contact in 20 years, so there's that. Real talk: I was utterly and completely shocked at this accusation. I hope he's innocent but it doesn't look good.

    57. — The Tower of Babel is the greatest marvel in the world. Immense as a mountain, the ancient Tower holds unnumbered ringdoms, warring and peaceful, stacked one on the other like the layers of a cake. It is a world of geniuses and tyrants, of luxury and menace, of unusual animals and mysterious machines. Soon after arriving for his honeymoon at the Tower, the mild-mannered headmaster of a small village school, Thomas Senlin, gets separated from his wife, Marya, in the overwhelming swarm of tourists, residents, and miscreants.
Senlin is determined to find Marya, but to do so he'll have to navigate madhouses, ballrooms, and burlesque theaters. He must survive betrayal, assassins, and the illusions of the Tower. But if he hopes to find his wife, he will have to do more than just endure. This quiet man of letters must become a man of action.

He considers himself to be a mostly lucky guy - despite the fact that he’s suffered from a debilitating disease since he was a small child, one that has left him unable to speak or to move without a wheelchair.
Largely confined to his home, Daniel spends the hours he’s not online communicating with irate air travelers observing his neighborhood from his front porch. One young woman passes by so frequently that spotting her out the window has almost become part of his daily routine. Until the day he’s almost sure he sees her being kidnapped....
    60. Balthasar, Baseball, and the Anima Technica Vacua | Whosoever Desires
    61. — Forget about enjoying those nostalgic sounds of the ball hitting the bat or mitt.  Even carrying on a conversation with the person next to you was impossible.  At one point, the friend with whom I was watching the game turned to me and yelled in my ear, “I used to like baseball because it was a contemplative game!”
But a contemplative game it no longer is.  As the nation’s pastime, baseball serves as a mirror reflecting larger movements in American culture: think of the struggles to integrate the game which preceded the civil rights movement, the zany uniforms and hairstyles which surfaced after the unrest of the late ’60s, or the amped-up patriotism baseball manifested after 9/11.  The changed atmosphere in ballparks from places of relative quiet punctuated by occasional cheering and organ music to coliseums containing frenzied maelstroms of electronically produced sound evidences the diffusion of the spirit of the anima technica vacua throughout our culture.

    70. — The United States Conference of Catholic Bishops ("USCCB", "Conference") is called to exercise faithful, competent and socially responsible stewardship in how it manages its financial resources. As a Catholic organization, the Conference draws the values, directions and criteria which guide its financial choices from the Gospel, universal church teaching and Conference statements. In order to function effectively and to carry out its mission, the Conference depends on a reasonable return on its investments and is required to operate in a fiscally sound, responsible and accountable manner. The combination of religious mandate and fiscal responsibilities suggests the need for a clear and comprehensive set of policies to guide the Conference's investments and other activities related to corporate responsibility.

    91. Emergencies in Cincinnati, with Mike Schafer and Sean Ater

Managing Decline?: 2% drop in Mass attendance per parish, per year. Average Sunday Mass is 1/3 full. This has been getting worse - and it's be tracked and known - for 20 years, but no one has done anything. They got used to the decline. They got used to the emergencies without the urgency that crises can motivate. Beacons of Light, criticized by Rod Dreher as trying to put a nice spin on dire circumstances, is also evangelization and discipleship centered.

      *What are the Families? *

The Archdiocese of Cincinnati has launched Beacons of Light, a comprehensive process of pastoral planning, to study every aspect of the archdiocese and parishes to determine how to best array our resources – human, physical and financial – to spread the Gospel far and wide.
      • Schnurr gets started - by JD Flynn - The Pillar
      • — The Archdiocese of Cincinnati announced on Friday a restructuring initiative that could eventually close 70% of archdiocesan parishes. The process will begin by clustering the 208 parishes of the archdiocese into 60 “families” of parishes, which will share pastors, staff, and infrastructure, but initially remain canonically independent.
