In this episode we go over our very first installment of Catholic History. I read about 20-30 mins worth of Catholic history at a time of my own notes taken from various Catholic history books. In this episode we have the early church. First I give a brief overview of the gospels, very brief... and then I move on discussing an overview of the early church until Paul. We discuss a bit about Paul and his travels and accomplishments. After that we move on to the first council of Jerusalem and then on to the Jewish Christians and their plight. Enjoy! In this episode we briefly revisit the four noble truths so that we can discuss the 8 fold path, and how by itself it may pose an issue in regards to relativism, but how paired with something such as the beatitudes (out of Matthew chapter 5) can make the 8 fold path a useful tool on how to live well and to be at peace, and to also treat others compassionately and empathetically. In essence when one asks; “what is right/complete action as stated in the 8 fold path?” You can answer with the beatitude(s) that states; “blessed are those who show mercy, who are meek, who are humble.” The beatitudes complete the path, the path provides chances to practice the beatitudes, win win situation. Ever seen a toddler have a moment with a statue? A tender moment with a hug? Or possibly a conversation? Earlier today I saw a video of a toddler hugging a statue of the Virgin Mary, and it made me think of how Zen and Christianity refer to children in some of their stories and in zen how a child’s mind relates to a “zen mind”. In this episode of our Scriptures and Parables segment we go over the idea or concept of being like a child, to do so we read a few passages from the Douay Rheims Bible and we read a few zen parables to highlight how Zen and Buddhists see children as being of pure mind or clean mind, and how Christ used a child as an example of the greatest of the kingdom of heaven in humility. A pure mind and extreme humility, could these be related? Let’s explore the stories and a little of their meaning and ultimately, in the end, I’ll let you decide... This monster of an episode packs a ton of zen history, along with humorous stories of many of the zen masters who molded zen and Buddhism itself into what it is today. In this episode we cover pillar 5! The last in my sequence of; “Pillars of being Catholic with a Zen Mind.” Pillar 5 deals with death. More specifically the differences in Zen Buddhism, Buddhism and Hinduism beliefs, when compared to the Christian belief of the resurrection.
