In Matthew 6:1–18, Jesus warns against practicing righteousness for public approval. He addresses giving, prayer, and fasting — not condemning these acts, but exposing the danger of performing them to be seen by others. True devotion, He teaches, is directed toward the Father who sees in secret, and it flows from a sincere heart rather than a desire for applause. At the center of this section is the Lord’s Prayer, which reorients us toward God’s holiness, daily dependence, forgiveness, and trust.
