  • Virtual Reality Headsets for Managing Chronic Pain

Pain is not a game. Chronic non-malignant pain has few effective treatment options, particularly since the adverse effects of opioids have become more known. Many patients with chronic pain also develop mental health issues such as depression and anxiety.  A new virtual reality system, designed for at-home self-use, has been approved by the FDA to treat chronic low back pain in adults.  Dr. John Swegle, a pain management expert, joins host Geoff Wall to discuss how this potentially gamechanging device gained FDA approval and logistical challenges patients may have in obtaining access.

  • Optimizing Steroid Dosing in AECOPD - Does one Size Fit All?

Since the REDUCE study was published in 2013, most guidelines recommend a standard dose of prednisone 40mg for 5 days (or an equivalent dose of another steroid). However, the optimal dose of steroids may be different depending on patient factors. Tune in to explore the concept of personalizing steroid doses in AECOPD using a dosing scale.

  • Prevent COVID-19 Vaccine Errors

In the past several weeks, there have been news reports about pharmacies, health care clinics, and remote vaccination clinics giving the wrong dose of a vaccine.  Before these reports, there were also stories of health care providers inappropriately diluting the Pfizer vaccine resulting in a wrong dose delivered to adult patients.  Whenever we hear about these news reports, it causes most health care providers to become concerned, stressed, and anxious as to how to mitigate these types of errors.

  • Gain Empathy to Level Up

COVID-19 has brought on many challenges within our healthcare systems. CVS recently announced the closure of pharmacies across the nation causing thousands of workers to lose their jobs. Other healthcare systems are scrambling to keep up due to shortages of workers.  And at the same time, they are trying to stay afloat and to meet business needs. This has caused a decrease in empathy within patient care.  In this week's conversation, Jake Galdo discusses with Randy McDonough, co-owner of Towncrest Pharmacy Corp, how to bring empathy back to your practice.

    CEO, Seguridad, Inc

    Guest

    Takeaways

    1. The circumstances within healthcare, especially in pharmacy, are trying to meet high demands. Systems are short-staffed and struggling to maintain their business. Pharmacists are unable to display patient care with empathy as they are overworked and feeling depleted.
    2. Healthcare systems need to be disrupted in order to change what is happening. Our healthcare systems are going down a path that cannot be sustained.
    3. Place yourself in your patient's shoes. How would you view your practice? Start making changes now and return your focus on empathy with your patient care.
