Ned has received info from the remaining Arryn household staff about Jon Arryn's final days. Following one tip leads to a shocking discovery, in the shape of a young blacksmith's apprentice who looks an awful lot like a certain king. However, we don't stop there. We comb through all of the information he's gotten and consider ways that the dots might connect.
Chapter Review:
During a Small Council meeting, Eddard Stark hears that the Gold Cloaks, the city watch, are woefully understaffed for keeping the peace, due to the the influx of people in town for the Hand's tourney. Ned OKs hiring more men and provides 20 of his own guard. Back in his chambers, he peruses the book Jon Arryn had looked at the day before his illness began, but Ned can't find anything useful in it.
Jory Cassel has tracked down all of the people left in the city connected to Jon Arryn. Most of the information consists of rumors but Stannis Baratheon, the king's brother, keeps coming up in connection with Jon. Ned follows one of the leads to an armorer who Jon supposedly commissioned to make a suit of fancy armor. It turns out that Jon did not actually hire the man to make anything. He came to see a boy. When Ned sees the boy, he realizes that he is clearly a son of King Robert. The chapter ends with Ned wondering why Jon Arryn was visiting a bastard of Robert’s, and why it was worth his life.
