Many Christians have a feeling that following Jesus shouldn’t be painful and costly, but only happy and profitable. So when we face the difficulties of life and the difficulties of taking a stand for Jesus Christ and our legs wobble under the weight of it all, we don’t understand how we are to have joy in the midst of it all. Death is an unpleasant topic for most people. For many, there is uncertainty and fear of death. Even many in the church don’t like to think or speak of death. When we arrive at Philippians 2:14 we find that “working out your own salvation”, living out your faith in Jesus, gets very practical. The message from Paul here is simple: stop grumbling! Paul is taking head-on the sin of complaining. And yes, complaining is a sin and we need to be quick to repent of it when we are guilty of it.
