When we hear the word “worship,” what immediately comes to mind?
Is it music, singing, a church service, a favorite hymn, a modern worship song, or the way a particular experience makes us feel?
Those things may be part of worship, but biblical worship is much bigger than a musical style, an emotional response, or a Sunday morning experience.
In Part 2 of our series on worship, Dr. Terry L. Peer and Terry Peer examine a difficult but necessary question:
Do we worship God—or do we worship our experience with God?
What happens when worship becomes focused on our preferences, feelings, comfort, or satisfaction? How do we move from worship that is centered on ourselves to worship that is truly centered on God?
Hebrews 13:15 describes worship as a continual sacrifice of praise offered to God through Jesus. That language matters. An offering and a sacrifice are not self-serving. They involve giving something to the One who alone is worthy.
In this episode, we discuss:
• What the Bible means when it speaks about worship
• Why worship is more than singing or music
• The difference between a worship experience and a worship opportunity
• How worship can become mechanical or insincere
• Preparing our hearts before corporate worship
• Evaluating worship by God’s glory instead of personal preference
• Becoming active participants rather than spectators
• Worshiping the Father in spirit and truth
The question is not simply, “Did I enjoy worship?”
The greater question is:
Was God honored, glorified, and pleased by what I offered Him?
“But the hour is coming, and is now here, when the true worshipers will worship the Father in spirit and truth, for the Father is seeking such people to worship Him.”
—John 4:24
