● Chananya ben Azur, a false prophet, related a false prophecy in front of the Beis Hamikdash: “Hashem is going to save you from Nevuchadnetzar! Hashem is going to return King Yehoyachin from exile.”
● Yirmiya responded: “Amen, may Hashem listen to your words.” Yirmiya then related that Chananya would be punished for his false prophecy. *Note: Metsudos says that Yirmiya said “Amen” in a sarcastic, mocking voice.*
● Chananya then broke the yoke that Yirmiya was wearing.
● Hashem told Yirmiya that Chananya would die within the year for doing that, and that is what happened.
● Chananya died within the year.

● This prophecy occurred in the beginning of the reign of King Yehoyakim.
● Hashem instructs Yirmiyah to wear a yoke around his arms and neck and to send an additional five yokes to the other kings/ nations of the world. This symbolized how the world would be under the yoke/rule of Nevuchadnetzar.
Note: Rashi says that Yirmiyah actually wore the yoke for fifteen years. Radak says that Yirmiya wore the yoke for only one year.
● Yirmiyah sends a message to King Tzidkiyah that it is better to surrender and accept the yoke of Nevuchadnetzar and not be exiled from the land, than to try to fight against Nevuchadnetzar and be thrown out of the land.
● Yirmiyah tells the people not to listen to the false prophets who claimed that Hashem would deliver Bavel into their hands.
● Nevuchadnetzar will plunder the vessels of the Beis Hamikdash.

- During the reign of Yehoyakim ben Yoshiyahu, Hashem tells Yirmiyahu to stand in the courtyard of the Beis HaMikdash and tell everybody to follow the Torah and listen to the prophets that He sends or the Beis HaMikdash will become like Shiloh.
- When he finishes, the priests and false prophets seize him and ask him why he said that.
- They discuss giving him the death penalty but he responds that Hashem sent him and that they should repent so that Hashem will relent of the evil He had spoken about them.
- He says that they can do whatever they want to him but they should know that if they put him to death, they will be putting innocent blood upon themselves and upon the city because he has been speaking the truth.
- The people say to the priests and prophets that he does not deserve death and some of the elders invoke Chizkiyahu's favorable response to the prophecies of Micha.
- However, they respond that a different prophet named Uriah was sentenced to death by Yehoyakim so he fled to Egypt but they sent for him there and assassinated him.
- Nevertheless, Achikam ben Shaphan makes sure that Yirmiyahu is not killed.

● Hashem shows Yirmiyah a vision of two baskets of figs – a good basket and a rotten basket – in front of the Beis Hamikdash.
● The good basket of figs represents how Hashem will be with the Torah scholars who are currently in exile, because they try to keep Hashem’s Torah.
● Hashem will accept their teshuvah if they try to come close to Him with all their heart.
● The rotten basket represents King Tzidkiyahu and the residents of Yerushalayim who fail to keep Hashem’s Torah.
● The residents of Yerushalayim will be punished and destroyed.

Yirmiyahu says in Hashem's name, “woe to the ‘shepherds’ who lose and scatter My sheep.’”
He says that the shepherds will be punished at the time when the sheep are gathered back from all the lands that they were dispersed to and they will be given proper shepherds who will take care of them.
He says days are coming when the righteous sprout of Dovid will reign and there will be justice and righteousness in the land.
At that point, people will swear by Hashem Who gathered the nation back to the land as opposed to Hashem Who brought them up from Egypt.
He then speaks about all the different types of false prophets who never received Divine communication and who nevertheless encourage the people to sin.
Hashem says He will punish the false prophets severely for telling everyone that there will be peace and to just continue sinfully doing what they were doing.
He says that if a false prophet or anyone in the nation will ask Yirmiyahu about the masa (“prophecy,” but literally “burden”) of Hashem, they shall be rebuked for the inappropriate terminology used to describe the Divrei Elokim Chaim, “the words of the living G-d Hashem, Master of legions, our G-d.”
Rather they should ask “what did Hashem speak?”
Such disrespect will result in them being discarded and they will be given everlasting disgrace and humiliation.

Pashchur Ben Imeir HaKohen strikes and imprisons Yirmiyahu in the Beis HaMikdash.
The next day he releases him and Yirmiyahu says that his name isn’t Pashchur but rather Magor MiSaviv (Surrounding Troops) because Hashem will deliver him and all his loved ones into the hands of marauding enemies and Yehudah will be given over to the king of Babylonia.
He says they will take all the wealth of the city and that he and his family would be held there in captivity and that they would die and be buried there.
Yirmiyahu then turns to Hashem and says that He persuaded him to become a prophet yet he had become a laughing stock and that the word of Hashem had become a source of shame for him.
He said he tried not to prophesy anymore but the word of Hashem would be like a burning fire in his heart, stored in his bones, and he would not be able to contain it.
He notes his pursuers’ plans to take him down and take revenge against him but he says that Hashem is his Mighty Hero and they cannot therefore overcome him. He asks Hashem to show His vengeance against them and even sings to Hashem saying that he will praise Hashem for saving the destitute from the hands of evildoers.
He curses the day that he was born and the man who informed his father of his birth.
He laments that he was not aborted and that he was born to see the distress and grief and have his days end in shame.
