    ● Hashem’s relationship with Am Yisrael is like that of a potter who forms clay into which ever shape he desires. Alshich HaKadosh explains that this is a deep reference to Techiyas HaMeisim. Hashem has the ability to revive the dead and bring them back to life.

    ● At any moment Hashem can destroy or uplift any nation as He sees fit.

    ● Hashem continues to urge Yirmiyah to tell the nation to do Teshuvah.

    ● Yisrael has given up on returning to Hashem.

Yisrael’s low level of thinking leads them astray from serving Hashem.

    ● The residents of Anasos and Yerushalayim plan to kill Yirmiyah.

Targum explains: They wanted to spread slander about Yirmiyah. They were planning on having false witnesses testify that Yirmiyah had committed adultery. This would cause Yisrael to automatically not listen to Yirmiyah.

    ● Yirmiyah prays for his own physical safety and for Hashem to punish those who wanted to harm him.

Yirmiyahu says that the sin of Yehudah is “inscribed with an iron pen and etched into the tablet of their hearts” and that they “remember their altars as they remember their children.”

He warns them that all their treasures will be made into the spoils of enemies and they will be forced to leave the land and will be enslaved by enemies in a foreign land for they have “ignited a fire of Hashem's wrath that will burn forever.”

He quotes Hashem as saying cursed be the man who trusts in flesh and blood but blessed be the man who trusts in Hashem and He compares them to different trees, the latter being like a tree planted near water which will produce fruit even in a year of drought.

He says that the heart is deceitful but He knows their feelings and tests their innermost thoughts.

He says that one who unjustly amasses wealth will lose it.

Yirmiyahu calls Hashem the Mikveh Yisrael (Hope of Israel) and the Mekor Mayim Chaim (Source of freshwater).

He asks Hashem to heal him and save him.

He says that people ask him where the word of Hashem is and he prays that it come true.

He notes that he was not excited to become a “shepherd” but his lips were directed towards the Divine Presence.

He asks that Hashem protect him and let his pursuers be shamed and to bring them a day of evil and devastation.

He quotes Hashem Who tells him to stand at the gates of Yerushalayim and tell everyone not to carry on Shabbos or do any form of work but rather they should sanctify it.

He notes that they nevertheless did not listen and He informs them that if they do keep Shabbos, they will inhabit the land and be able to bring offerings to the Beis HaMikdash but if they do not, there will be fire set to the gates and it will consume the palaces and the fire will not be extinguished.

    ● Yirmiyahu recalls how Hashem told him not to marry and have children for everyone in that place would die of famine, plague, and sword and be without burial or eulogy.

    ● He also told him not to visit houses of mourning, not to eulogize, and to not even shake his head because He already gathered in His peace, kindness, and mercy.

    ● He also told him not to go to wedding parties for He would be abolishing the “kol sason v’kol simcha…” and that when the people would ask why that would happen and how they sinned, he should tell them the following: it’s because their fathers had forsaken Hashem and they themselves had taken it to the next level.

    ● Therefore, they will be tossed out of the land but ultimately returned at which point people will no longer swear by Hashem Who orchestrated Yetzias Mitzrayim but rather by Hashem Who returned the exiles to the Land.

A Gutten Mo'eid / Moadim L'Simcha! At this time last year, we were awaiting the extremely emotional return of our final hostages on Hoshana Rabbah. In last cycle's Mini-Shiur, we discussed the plight of a hostage, as it is described in our Perek today. I debated re-recording the Shiur. I'm in a different time zone as most of the participants of our group. On this Chol HaMo'eid Sukkos, I decided on to maintain the original Mini-Shiur. Please allow it to offer you an extra Kavanah this year for your recitation of Halleil, "Hodu LaShem Ki Tov Ki L'Olam Chasdo." B"H, there are no longer any hostages of our brothers and sisters awaiting freedom from the hell of Hamas YMSV"Z.

    ● Yirmiyahu recalls how Hashem told him that even if Moshe and Shmuel would attempt to defend Klal Yisrael, they would be unsuccessful.

    ● Hashem attributes the impending destruction to the evil damage of Menashe ben Yechezkiyahu.

    ● Hashem laments the terrible tragedy that befalls the Jewish people like the multitudes of widows and the “distressed mother of seven children whose sun sets in the daytime.”

    ● Yirmiyahu laments his own birth and existence since he has to be public enemy #1, being cursed despite neither being a creditor or a borrower.

    ● Nevertheless, He promises that there will be a remnant left that will be good and that the enemy at one point will encounter Yirmiyahu (positively).

    ● Yirmiyahu asks Hashem to remember him, to avenge him from his enemies, and not let him die for he had borne disgrace on Hashem’s behalf.

    ● Yirmiyahu tells Hashem that he would eat up His words rejoicing upon receiving prophecy and would sit alone because of His mission as He would fill him up with (words of) fury.

He therefore asked why his pain seems to be so permanent and he says that Hashem answered him that he should return (either himself or cause others to do teshuvah) so that he will be like Hashem’s own mouth, so that they will return to him, and so that He will save him from his enemies.

Yirmiyahu receives word from Hashem regarding droughts that will be brought upon Yehudah and Yerushalayim and the complete inability to find water or vegetation that will result.

Yirmiyahu davens to Hashem appealing to be merciful for the sake of His name which is proclaimed upon Klal Yisrael but Hashem tells him not to daven for them for He would ignore their fasts, calling out, and offerings and rather they would all be killed by the sword.

Yirmiyahu argues that they have been following the lead of (false) prophets who had been telling them that everything would be okay to which He responds that He had not sent, commanded, or even spoken to those “prophets.”

He speaks of the great destruction that will befall first those “prophets” and then those who follow them.

Yirmiyahu asks Hashem if He totally hates and rejects Klal Yisrael as would seem to be implied by His threatened incurable plague.

He confesses the collective sinfulness of the nation and their fathers but asks Hashem not to disgrace His name and throne by annulling the covenant.

He concludes by noting that nobody can make it rain except Hashem.

    ● Yirmiyahu recounts how Hashem had instructed him to buy and wear a linen belt and not bring it in water.

    ● He then commanded him to take the belt and hide it in the cleft of a rock in Pras and many days later asked him to retrieve it.

    ● Upon retrieval, Yirmiyahu noted that it was ruined and useless and Hashem declared that Yehudah and Yerushalayim will similarly become useless since they do avodah zarah.

    ● He explained that although He fastened Himself to them like a belt to be an honorable and glorious people, they had not listened to Him.

    ● Hashem tells Yirmiyahu to tell them that every jug will be filled with wine and when they respond that that’s obvious, He clarifies that He will be filling them with drunkeness and will mercilessly smash them against each other.

    ● Yirmiyahu tells them to please listen to the word of Hashem and not be arrogant.

    ● He warns them to ascribe honor to Hashem before it gets really dark so that they could hope for light and says that if they don’t listen, his (or His) soul will cry and eyes will drip tears.

    ● Hashem tells Yirmiyahu to rebuke the king and queen (mother) for failing to properly lead their “flock.”

    ● Hashem says that the nation is seemingly beyond repair like a leopard that cannot remove its spots and it will therefore be punished in a measured way, in response to their forgetting of Hashem, reliance on falsehood, and their national adultery.

    ● Yirmiyahu has a conversation with Hashem about why the wicked prosper.

    ● Hashem warns of the impending doom saying that He has forsaken His house and His heritage and has essentially delivered the “love of His soul” into the hands of their enemies due to their brazen sins and their ignoring all the rebukes and warning signs.

    ● Yirmiyahu quotes Hashem as warning the surrounding countries that He is exiling them as well as Yehudah among then but when He will eventually return Yehudah to its land, if the enemies learned from Yehudah to swear in Hashem’s Name as much as they taught Yehudah to swear in the Baal’s name, they will be restored as well. Otherwise, they will be destroyed.

Yirmiyahu reminds Klal Yisrael about the bris they made with Hashem of “Arur Ish Asher Lo Yishma...” and mentions that their national legacy, freedom, relationship with Hashem, and land are dependent on their upkeep of that bris.

Hashem tells Yirmiyahu to tell the nation that due to their idolatry and forsaking of the covenant and having as many gods as they have cities and bamos as they have streets, He will be bringing an inescapable evil upon them.

Hashem then tells Yirmiyahu not to even daven on the behalf of Klal Yisrael anymore.

Yirmiyahu acknowledges that despite his concern about the welfare of Klal Yisrael, Hashem had informed about their assassination plots for him.

Hashem says that since they threatened Yirmiyahu with his life, the people of Anosos will die at the sword and their children will die of hunger.

    ● Hashem prefers to distance Himself from the nation, as they are filled with falsehood. (MaHari Kra)

    The nation has become dishonest.

    ● Hashem will “refine” Yisrael through severe punishment. (Metzudos: Suffering cleans a person’s soul.)
