Chicks Talking Footy

It’s the AFLW Grand Final show and Bree, Motty and Fi covered it very thoroughly.

We also talked about the history of women’s football in Australia with eminent sports historian and author, Assoc Professor Rob Hess. He posted a black and white image of a female footballer from 1921 last week in much the same kicking pose as the Tayla Harris one that recently caused a touch of controversy. No such controversy back in 1921.

Emily Scott from the St Kilda Sharks talked about what it’s like to be a transgender footballer, her hopes for the Pride Cup movement and sausage sizzles.

Oh and we talked about men’s footy too.

It was a jam packed show with the Chicks celebrating the success of the AFLW Pride Game, AFLW finals, Round 1 of AFLM, the good the bad and the ugly of social media after the trolling of Tayla Harris (and subsequent troll slaying by the masses) and we managed to chat with Kerryn Harrington from Carlton AFLW and  and Marijana Rajcic (Bec made a semi successful attempt at pronunciation) from Adelaide AFLW about the Prelims.

This week a storm erupted on social media when 7AFL removed a photo of Tayla Harris kicking a magnificent goal (taken by Michael Willson). The photo drew the sexist, sexual and disgusting comments from the trolls. What will now be known as a line in the sand moment, many high profile players and people from the broader community shared the image which will now forever be an iconic photo. 7AFL apologised and reinstated the photo. A victory for women, the broader footy community and decent people everywhere! Tayla was also wearing the Carlton Pride guernsey which will now be immortalised forever! The Chicks discussed it all. Enjoy!

The Chicks broadcast LIVE on Joy at the AFLW Pride Game between the Bulldogs and Carlton at Whitten Oval. A crowd of 9600 turned up with many wearing their rainbows, the players wore Pride Guernseys (Darcey wore a mouth guard with the transgender colours), the umpires waved rainbow flags and we all celebrated Pride together at the footy.

We chatted to some of the pioneers of women’s football and LGBTIQA+ inclusion – Kate O’Halloran from Triple R, Debbie Lee from the Western Bulldogs AFLW, Susan Alberti, Dr. Bridie O’Donnell – Office of Women in Sport , Michelle Redfern, Hannah Scott from Western Bulldogs AFLW, Bri Davey from Carlton AFLW, Nicole Livingstone Head of Women’s Football AFL and more.

CTF mixed tape: Bec, Rachel and Bree did a lap around Albert Park with CEO of  Australian Grand Prix Corporation (AGPC) Andrew Westacott ahead of this weekend Grand Prix.

We chatted with Richmond Football Club Diversity and Inclusion Manager Rana Hussain about the fabulous work happening at the Club. Including the recently launched Women’s Foundation membership, work being done in the Diversity Action plan space and the Bachar Houli Program.

Dinner table chat was robust and included snacks as well. We need a lay down!

And don’t forget to listen to Chicks Talking Footy broadcast the AFLW Pride Game on Sunday 17 March at 3pm. You might win the signed AFLW Bulldogs 2018 Premiership guernsey – although you’ll have to buy a raffle ticket at Joy.org.au first.
