Tonight’s Scripture
“Listen to your father, who gave you life, and do not despise your mother when she is old.” — Proverbs 23:22
Evening Meditation:
Honoring our parents can be difficult, especially when they’ve let us down. But God’s command doesn’t come with an exception clause. In a culture quick to cancel people, even family, God’s Word stands firm: “Honor your father and mother” (see Ephesians 6:2-3). This isn’t just a suggestion; it’s a command with a promise of blessing.
Dishonoring our parents, regardless of how we justify it, can lead to spiritual darkness and bitterness (see Proverbs 20:20). Instead, we’re called to forgive their failings and reflect the grace that God has shown us.
Honoring imperfect parents isn’t about denying pain or pretending everything was okay. It’s about choosing obedience to God above our emotions, releasing bitterness, and making peace where possible. Even if our parents are no longer living, we can still honor their memory in ways that point to grace and redemption.
Your Nightly Prayer
Dear Father,
Thank you for our parents. Give us the fortitude to look past their imperfections and to honor them because You ask us to. Help us to forgive them for the ways they have failed us, hurt us, and let us down. Free us to let go of our failures, weaknesses, and deficiencies because You forgive us. Strengthen us to do what pleases You over our own feelings and reasoning.
In Jesus’ name,
Amen.
