It is said that hard times can forge a hard work ethic. For Marijan Raskovic, aka Jelly For The Babies, this is certainly the case. For Marijan, music is life. Coming from the time of a severe economic crash in Serbia, Marijan struggled for a better life, while learning the ins and outs of music production on his home computer. Over the years, he has refined his approach, and his “Jelly For The Babies” moniker pioneers what he calls the “candy-flavored sound.”

We continue our Chromacast Classics Series in episode 40, as we give new life to a timeless mix by Kuru (Ryan Origin and Jeff Tovar) from 2012. Recorded live during their opening set for the iconic 'IHeartComix Presents' series (this one featuring Scuba and Machinedrum) at Los Globos in Los Angeles, Kuru's unique fusion of bass, techno, and deep progressive was one we felt was well-worth bringing out of the archives.

Long time collaborators Ryan Origin and Jeff Tovar wanted to change the way they were participating in music, so the Kuru project was born. On stage, their live performances covered ground untouched by most others at the time; dual-laptops with synced visuals by Brian Markman (now of Forward) created the perfect conditions to get lost in the worlds they designed. Kuru were the Universal Architects, crafting alternate possibilities for all to explore.

Kingpin began his dance music career as a DnB DJ in 1999. Flipped to progressive house and global club culture in 2005 after feeling DnB had reached its creative pinnacle, making a pilgrimage to Ibiza every few years. Stopped playing out professionally in 2008, but never stopped mixing and being involved in dance culture.

Something of an enigma as an artist, this Arizona based producer is definitely in the ‘quality over quantity’ camp. Forerunners music is about the slow build, the journey, where filters ebb and flow, layers creep to the front then withdraw, where the percussion is hypnotic and the synths repetitive, and the melody draws the listener in with its subtlety, rather than a crass fanfare. It’s either early night material for big trance rooms, or peak time material for intelligent progressive floors – spun by DJs who know how to work a room. This is what progressive trance music is all about.

GuyRo is an Irish-born, Spanish-based electronica DJ and producer, focusing on cooking up an infectious fusion of synth-laden techno and progressive house. Not one to be pigeon-holed into a singular style or tempo, GuyRo traverses the spectrum of dance music, with his sets comprising of everything from downtempo, to breaks, to the tougher grooves of house and techno. Simmo (aka Ian Simpson) was born in mid 70s Scotland, growing up listening to Rock and Heavy Metal of the 80s. At the age of 16, he discovered dance music and bought his 1st set of belt drive turntables. Gradually over the years, he progressed to direct drive, then CD decks, and is now fully digital, using Traktor hardware and software. Over the years his sounds have mellowed and his sets usually sit around 118 bpm. You can expect to hear deep melodic sounds with strings and piano in most of his sets, including this one.
