Tonight's podcast is extended by about 45 minutes(following show was postponed due to illness). At 8:30 I was joined in the studio by local singer-songwriter John Pippus, whose new album "Howl At The Moon" has just been released.

I'm back! Pre-emption last week and a holiday in the sun week before that (thx to Paul Norton for filling in). A wonderful little mid-winter festival, Festival du Bois, takes place March 1-3 so we featured some of its music. As well, Mireille "Mimi" Roy of the festival's staff phoned to fill us in on what to expect in Mackin Park this weekend.
Besides that, lots of new Canadian folk/roots music, as well as some classic Emmylou Harris to warm up the cold folks in Amarillo, TX and elsewhere.

These not just any love songs. I’ve dug deep through my collection to find the funniest and goofiest and/or darkest and maddest representations of the genre. It was quite a selection process, since we all know most songs are love songs in some way or another. To further narrow the field, I have selected only songs that actually have “love” in the title - just so you know for sure what you are listening to. I will be broadening the genre base considerably for this special show - there will be blues, R&B, jazz, country, reggae, rockabilly and more in addition to folk. The emphasis will always be on danceability , so I expect y’all to roll up the living room rug and dance your butts off when you listen to this show!

Besides new Canadian releases, tonight's show included polka from Bela Fleck, a Mardi Gras mambo, and some vintage Joni Mitchell on vinyl. Tonight's phone interview was with Fernie, BC musician Troy Cook, aka "Bubba Uno". He's about to go on tour with fellow quirky songwriters David P. Smith and Ben Sures. I had the honour of filling in for GAK and his show XHM (Exploding Head Movies) tonight. In keeping with his theme of "the soundtrack to your life", I featured....wait for it...some Bob Dylan. Specifically, the 2-disc soundtrack to Martin Scorcese's documentary "No Direction Home".
I also squeezed in some South American content, in honour of Gak's trip there. We look forward to his return next week. Meantime, I hope you enjoy this little podcast. Thanks for listening!

No theme tonight, no interviews: just 2 hours of eclectic, mostly new, mostly Canadian, folk/roots music. On "Vinyl Vault" we played some live Dave Van Ronk from the early 1980's. Did you know that the Coen Brothers are soon to release a movie, loosely based on Dave's autobiography "Mayor of MacDougall Street"?
