Last Folk Oasis of summer 2012! Sage McBride of Fernie band Shred Kelly phoned in to chat about their upcoming tour, which includes a stop at the Railway Club Sept. 20. Since today is Int'l Talk Like A Pirate Day, we featured a few pirate songs....arrrr!
Best wishes for the rest of your week, and many thanks for checking out this podcast.

    cheers, val

Yes, the fifth annual Vancouver festival celebrating a most understood instrument takes place Sept. 12-15. Accordion Noir Festival, or "Accordion For Outliers" http://accordionnoirfest.com
Great excuse to feature local squeezebox-friendly bands such as Geoff Berner, Maria In The Shower, The Creaking Planks. Also featured this week was my new favourite Acadian folk/trash chanteuse, Lisa Leblanc.
Take care all and enjoy the rest of this summer, because autumn is officially around the corner!

Welcome back UBC students! Lots of activity around the Student Union Building this fine late summer evening. We opened tonight's show with some yodelling, and then an interview with said yodeller, John Lilly. He will be on tour in the Vancouver area next week. After that, straight into another interview with multi-instrumentalist member of The Bills (from Victoria), Adrian Dolan. As a bookend to the yodelling opener, we finished off with the classic cover of "Gin and Juice" as performed by The Gourds. (they're touring the Pacific Northwest soon)
    Cheers and thanks for listening!

Tonight's live session was with Vancouver's Christa Couture, who has a CD release party Sept. 6 at the Rogue Folk Club. We enjoyed delightful conversation and a couple of live songs. Sharing the bill Sept. 6 will be SONiA (of Disappear Fear) - we did a live phone interview with her at the top of the show.

Enjoy the Labour Day weekend and play safe!
    See you in September...

Sorry about the lame title, but how else to label this week's show? Which was a pastiche, a potpourri of (mostly) new Canadian folk/roots releases. Two eclectic hours! Thanks as always for listening. I'm taking next week off, so will be back live Wed. August 29 with more kumbaya-free folk.
    Stay cool, dry, and hydrated..

Still festival season here on the West Coast! Featured tonight were musicians performing at above festivals, plus a whole lot of new releases. Also a song dedicated to World Congress of Herpetology, now underway at UBC.

Hope you're enjoying these warm summer days,

Aug. 1 was the second night of Vancouver's annual fireworks competition, so several songs along that theme were sprinkled throughout the evening. Musical tribute was paid to Jerry Garcia, who would have turned 70 on this day. Tonight's interviews involved the upcoming FolkWest festival in Victoria, from perspectives of the artistic director (Oliver Swain) and a performing musician (David Newberry). Please support this new festival, which takes place Aug. 11 + 12: http://folkwest.ca/
Cheers, and many thanks for listening!

Tonight's show was extended by about 20 minutes as I borrowed some of "Sexy In VanCity" time.. Which nicely allowed for a longer interview with the very charming Joshua Hyslop, who hails from the Fraser Valley (just east of Vancouver). We heard a couple of songs performed live and some great stories. Also featured on tonight's show were a couple more Woody Guthrie covers, and a musical tribute to the recently departed Kitty Wells.
Enjoy your summer and have a safe weekend!

Started things off tonight with a little Vancouver Folk Music Festival 'post-mortem' and also talked about the upcoming Mission Folk Music Festival. Roger McGuinn, founding member of the Byrds (who continues to have a solo career) turned 70 last Friday. Woody Guthrie, as we all probably know by now, had a well-publicized centenary on Saturday. We paid musical tribute to both gentlemen this warm summer evening.
Hope you're all keeping cool and dry! As always, thanks for listening.

We were honoured to be a community sponsor of the 35th annual Vancouver Folk Music Festival. I co-hosted two hours of live broadcast on Saturday afternoon with Adam Januscz. We were lucky enough to chat with Veda Hille, Steve Dawson, Mrigya, Royal Wood and more. Enjoy!
