VFMF celebrates its 35th birthday this year! Lookin' good for middle age.. ;-) The entire show was devoted to artists playing this year's event at Jericho Beach (July 13 to 15): everyone from Dan Mangan to Ani DiFranco to Ramblin' Jack Elliott. Two live phone interviews tonight -- first was with Royal Wood, second with evalyn parry. Both are Toronto artists familiar to Vancouver audiences, and performing for their first time at VFMF.
Have a great time this weekend, everyone. If you're going to the festival, don't forget your hat, water bottle, sunscreen, and Birkenstocks!

    peace/out,

My July 4 show was cancelled due to a scheduled power outage here on UBC campus, but I filled in for the Saturday blues show, "Code Blue". The theme was women performing the blues, and I thought it went well enough to share with you listeners. Hope you enjoy it!
Summer is here at last; don't forget to 'slip/slop/slap' and stay cool, mes amis!

Canada Day is July 1, so in that spirit we had an (almost) 100% Canadian Content show. Featured were two lovely interviews. First was with Amanda Walther of Toronto duo Dala, second with Julien Álvarez Thomet of Montréal group Bombolessé. Both groups will be performing at the 35th annual Vancouver Folk Music Festival, which is coming up in a few weeks.
Canadians and Americans everywhere, please have yourselves a safe and happy long weekend! Canada Day Up Canada Way...eh?

First day of summer 2012! Hope you're enjoying it so far. Besides our lovely live session with From Birch to Yew, there were phone interviews with Silas Lowe (of Austin band Atomic Duo) and Vancouver guitarist Alexander Flock. It's still Accordion Awareness Month, so we started the show off with one of the greats, Esteban "Steve" Jordan.
Take care, enjoy your summer, and thanks so much for listening!

Almost summer! We started off with Vancouver's own Balkan brass band, Orkestar Slivovica, did an interview with Linda Tanaka about next month's Vancouver Folk Music Festival, talked to Willy Blizzard on the road, and finished with some new Corb Lund! Phew! In there somewhere was tucked a little musical tribute to Rob Lowe's new fave city, Winnipeg. (google if you don't get the reference..)

    Cheers and thanks for listening!

Yes, June is indeed Accordion Awareness Month (some of the history here: http://www.ladyofspain.com/naam.html) so we featured some "deep" polka from the U.S. Midwest. Also featured tonight was former Vancouverite Linda McRae's new album "Rough Edges & Ragged Hearts".
Been a crazy week out there, n'est-ce pas? Hope you're all managing to get some fun in. Thanks, as always, for listening!

A sad and turbulent week. Today (May 30) word drifted north of the Cafe Racer shootings in Seattle, which killed two members of roots/burlesque band "Gods Favorite Beefcake". We paid musical tribute to them, and also to Doc Watson, who passed away this week. Had a lovely interview with Creston, BC singer-songwriter Elena Yeung, who's touring BC this week.

Take care, everyone, be careful out there, and give your friends an extra big hug this week.

    cheers, val

Accordion Awareness Month is coming up in June, so we warmed up with a set of Celtic accordion tunes as well as various other songs containing accordion. We chatted by phone with Cindy Doire + Andrea Ramolo of Toronto duo Scarlett Jane. They're currently on tour in Western Canada and no, they're not a heavy metal band..
Lots of touring artists this month, including Montreal's Elage Diouf - we hear a powerful version of "Man of Constant Sorrow" from him tonight.
Take care, happy Memorial Day weekend to all my American friends, and play safe!

New releases and two interview segments. First was with Jay Aymar, a Torontonian touring BC. Later we heard from 3 BC singer-songwriters touring together, currently on the Prairies: Ryan McMahon, Cory Woodward & Christopher Arruda.
Tonight's closing cut was a tribute to American icon and master wordsmith George Carlin, who would've been 75 on May 12. He will always be a "Modern Man"!

Thanks for listening, and see you next week..

Kia ora! Still somewhat in a New Zealand state of mind, so I played a track from Wellington band Fat Freddy's Drop and shared some commentary on Vancouver from Air New Zealand's in-flight magazine. Did you know one can spot "bald eagles, elks (sic) and otters" around the waterfront here? ("if you are lucky") Hee hee.
Two interviews tonight: first with local folk artist Keith William Miller about his upcoming ep release. Second was with CiTR's own Steve Edge, on the occasion of the Rogue Folk Club's 25th anniversary. Some great stories from Steve!
Thanks again for your support, and keep in touch!
