Kia ora! Good to be back from New Zealand, where it's already Thursday afternoon.. Thanks again to all my fill-ins for April; do please check out their shows on podcast if you haven't yet. Tonight I chatted by phone with banjoist Jayme Stone, who's in town May 11. Then 2 members of local quartet Headwater joined me in the studio for a live(ly) interview. Their CD release party is May 4.
Thanks as always for listening, and keep in touch!

Kia ora! I'm still in New Zealand and GAK, host of Exploding Head Movies filled in tonight. A great and decades-crossing playlist from him, it would appear, and I look forward to hearing this podcast myself. Yours truly makes a special appearance live via crappy mobile phone from the southern part of North Island.
Next week Paul Norton hosts. Take care and have a happy autumn -- oops, spring!

I'm still in Aotearoa, Land of the Long White Cloud (aka New Zealand). Indeed we've had several days of long clouds, and several rainbows today on the rugged coast of the South Island. Thanks so much to Jim Burnett of "Code Blue" for his fabulous fill-in. I peeked at his playlist and am very impressed with his eclectic programming. Well done, Jim! Hope you all enjoy his fill-in and I'll be back in a few weeks. GAK of "Exploding Head Movies" is filling in next week.

    Take care and kia ora!

1I am away in New Zealand this month, but the magic of Folk Oasis lives on through guest hosts. Many thanks to Jonathon Brown of "Shameless" for his CanCon friendly playlist. Enjoy the show!

Kia ora and welcome to my last Folk Oasis broadcast until May. I'm off to New Zealand! Four wonderful CiTR programmers will be filling in while I'm gone, so do please tune in and enjoy. Tonight I chatted with Toronto's "ukulele songstress" Shelley O'Brien, who tours B.C. in April. Tonight's featured CD was the new Octoberman release "Waiting In The Well". In the Vinyl Vault we paid tribute to Earl Scruggs, who passed away this morning.
And to end the show, some New Zealand content.
I hope you enjoy this podcast, thanks for listening, and please keep in touch!

Tonight I had a brief phone chat with Steve Dawson about a new live music series at Electric Owl. Hope it goes well! Then a Folk Oasis first: an American singer-songwriter drove up from Washington State (Bellingham) to appear on the show. And he was great! Following Robert Sarazin Blake's live session I played the 16 min.(!) opening track from his new CD. I really dig it and hope you'll give it a listen.
Welcome to Spring 2012 and thanks for listening! Hope you'll tune in again next week.

    hugs, val

Tonight's throaty voice courtesy of Suzanne Pleshette* -- no, just me with a head cold. Lots of local (Vancouver) content on tonight's two hours, and a lovely interview with Maria Dunn of Edmonton, Alberta. She's doing a gig with Shannon Johnson at the Rogue Folk Club March 23 that you will want to catch if you're here.
Take care of yourselves and thanks again for listening! See you next week..

On the eve of March 8 we featured music performed and/or written by women. Featured were interviews with Bowen Island musician Kate Reid and various members of Wintermitts, a bilingual folk-pop Vancouver band. They (Wintermitts) did a lovely live session in the CiTR studios. Also featured this week was the recent Arhoolie compilation "Blues, Ballads, & Beyond", which is highly recommended for anyone with an interest in West Coast field recordings of blues and folk in the 1960's.
Have a happy International Women's Day and thanks for listening!

I'm back after a few weeks of pre-emptions. Today's Feb. 29, a day that only comes around once every four years, and we have a lovely song to end the show called "Leap Year". Also featured was a new Arhoolie collection of 1960's blues recordings, "Blues, Ballads and Beyond" in honour of Black History Month.
So that was tonight's show in a nutshell! Thanks for listening and I hope you'll join me again next week.
