Attorney General Merrick Garland struck a defiant tone Wednesday as he defended the Justice Department as independent of the White House and Congress, but Republicans attacked him repeatedly for the handling of high-profile investigations of Hunter Biden and Donald Trump. After being thwarted by Congress, President Joe Biden will use his executive authority to create a New Deal-style American Climate Corps. The White House said the program will employ more than 20,000 young adults who will build trails, plant trees, help install solar panels and do other work to boost conservation and help prevent catastrophic wildfires. The Fresno police department received more than a $23 million grant from the state to help stop retail theft.
