As we have been doing on Mondays throughout this offseason, today, we share a clinic segment with important points applicable to both sides of the ball and all positions to help improve your coaching and thought processes.

In this episode, a segment from this year’s COOL Clinic, Tennessee Offensive Line Coach Glen Elarbee explains how the Vols are successful in the run game, the context within what they do, and why it works for them. Clarity on all these points allows them to run one of the top offenses in the country year after year, built behind explosiveness, an incredibly fast tempo, and extremely wide receiver splits.

Ola Adams is the defensive analyst and analytics coordinator for Penn State. Prior to Penn State, Coach Adams served as the assistant defensive backs coach for the Denver Broncos. He was the defensive coordinator for Villanova before his jump to the NFL.

In this segment from his talk at the Lauren’s First and Goal Clinic, which he titled “Organized Chaos”, Coach Adams discusses his third down philosophy and strategy. He gives his approach to this critical down, sharing insight both on what he likes to do, as well as highlighting what offenses like to do in each third down category.

Coach Adams takes a very organized approach to third down because he knows his defense’s success is critical to the success of the team in winning the game.

This episode is from our archives with Mike Fox the defensive coordinator at Suny Brockport following their 2017 season.

Coach Fox joined the Brockport football coaching staff for the 2016 season as the Defensive Coordinator. Since his arrival on campus, the Brockport defense has catapulted into one of the top units in all of Division III football, culminating in a National Defensive Coordinator of the Year honor for Fox following the 2018 season. 

Brockport’s blitz-heavy defensive scheme installed by Fox led their league in rushing defense for four straight years (2016-2019) and they have also led the conference in scoring defense in for three straight seasons (2017-2019). 

Under Coach Fox, the Brockport defense has led the nation in several categories, including leading all levels of college football in rushing yards against for two consecutive seasons (2018, 2019). His blitz-heavy defensive scheme has helped Brockport to earn national acclaim among collegiate coaches across the country and the Brockport defense has been a major catalyst in the program’s three consecutive Empire 8 Conference championships. The program’s dominant play led to three straight NCAA Div. III Football Championship Second Round appearances and in 2017 the Golden Eagles advanced as far as the national semifinals. 

The 2018 season went down as a memorable one for Coach Fox, as the Green and Gold effectively halted their opponents on the ground and through the air. Through 11 of the Golden Eagles' 12 games, Brockport held its entire schedule to negative rushing yards.
